Joseph Turrin (b.1947) Kinza Tyrrell, Piano Claire McMahon is from the class of Professor Merrie Klazek. This recital is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Music (Performance) program. �Prayer of Saint Gregory, Alan Hovhaness Alan Hovhaness is an American composer or Armenian and Scottish descent. Saint Gregory is known as the bringer of light in the Armenian Apostolic Church. Prayer for Saint Gregory paints a picture of a prayer for light in a dark world. Concerto for Trumpet in E Flat Major, Johann Baptist Georg Neruda Initially written for the French horn, Neruda’s Concerto in Eb is a staple in classical trumpet repertoire. Composed in the overlap between the baroque and classical periods the piece combines the intricacy of the baroque with the melodic inclinations of the classical period. This piece is composed primarily using the method of composition known as fortspinnung, where a simple theme is “spun out” during several interconnected phrases. Vignettes for Trumpet and Percussion, James Stephenson Vignettes for Trumpet and Percussion, by James Stephenson showcases a variety of instruments. The percussion part includes marimba, vibraphone, snare drum, wood block, triangle, and tambourine. The trumpet part includes the C trumpet, flugelhorn, and cornet. Each movement is uniquely inspired by musicians like Lional Hampton and Igor Stravinsky, and by art pieces such as White on White by Kazimir Malevich. The seventh movement, MAX is based on a poem by Matthew Neall which alludes to Where the Wild Things Are a book by Maurice Sendak. The poem can be found below. Where do the wild things go? This is where the wild things go. All That Glitters, Dorothy Chang Written for Adam Zinatelli, All That Glitters was premiered on November 26, 2023 in Calgary. This is the second performance of this work. The first movement, Romanze, consists of a theme that is expanded throughout the movement. A straight mute and felt bag are used to create unique sonorities. The second movement, Agitation, uses complex harmon mute choreography and intense articulation to convey anxious energy and powerful emotion. The third movement Waiting, depicts feelings of waiting for someone or something that will never come. Someone to Watch Over Me, George Gershwin Someone to Watch Over Me, was written by George Gershwin, with lyrics by his brother Ira. Initially George Gershwin intended for the piece to be an up-tempo number but his brother convinced him otherwise. An improvised attempt to make myself seen without ever opening my eyes. — ruby koep Magnificat for Three Voices This Magnificat, composed in a renaissance influenced style, takes much inspiration from the church music of the past. In a traditional evensong service setting, the Magnificat is commonly paired with a Nunc Dimittis. These two pieces make up a set of canticles. Fauxbourdons, the alternation of chant verse and polyphonic verse, make up the structure of this piece and in turn highlight the Magnificat’s sacred text. — Nathan Malzon Rev-Matching In this work, I am exploring the musicality of combining both normal bowings and vertical bowings of cello to produce a flautando-like timbre. The use of vertical bowings and such timbre is initially inspired by the movement of shifting the gears of a vehicle. To drive a car with manual transmission, sometimes rev-matching has to be performed in order to make the gear changes smoothly. The driver needs to press on the accelerator to raise the engine speed, when downshifting a gear and just before re-engaging the clutch. The set of actions to rev-match and downshift allows the engine to regain torque rapidly. For me, life is just like driving — sometimes we must slow down, take a break, and have reflections, to enable us recharging to go faster afterward. Similarly, I wrote plenty of grand pauses in this work. It might be nice to have some silences and lengthened rests within the music. Jacob TV (b. 1951) Alexis Ciesla (b. 1967) �PROGRAM NOTES Richard Rodney Bennet As one of Britain’s most respected and versatile musicians, Bennett produced over two hundred works for the concert hall, and fifty scores for film and television, as well as having been a writer and performer of jazz songs for fifty years. Studies with Boulez in the 1950s immersed him in the techniques of the European avant-garde, though he subsequently developed his own distinctive style. In recent years, he adopted an increasingly tonal idiom. He was knighted for Services to Music in 1998. Concerto for Stan Getz is a thoroughly celebratory tribute to the possibilities of using jazz harmonies in conjunction with the composer’s own free-flowing serial technique. – RRB Alexis Ciesla is a French clarinetist who has studied in France and Switzerland. He is very interested in pedagogy, chamber music, improvisation, and traditional music from eastern Europe. He founded the Doumka Clarinet Ensemble. He has written pedagogic pieces for clarinet, for young band orchestras and for the theatre. – Ciesla. A.D. Perry studied piano with Lee Kum Sing and composition with Cortland Hultberg at the University of British Columbia. Perry has written over one hundred solo and various sized ensemble works which explore a diverse musical style ranging from simple Renaissance tonality to complex harmonies and aleatoric elements. As a result, some of her works are composed in a traditional mode, while others show an impressionist influence and a fondness for whole tone modalities. Perry currently teaches and composes in Summerland, British Columbia. Quartet. The third movement, Scherzo, uses early 20th Century Russan tonality along the lines of Prokofiev or Shostakovich. This movement is a real joke and I have put some silliness in the middle. Here, the performers should feel free to ham it up as much as they want – the more ham, the better.The final movement, Rondo, is American in harmonic flavour, but a real “dancey” gig when it comes right down to it. – A.D. Perry Marcel Poot studied composition and instrumentation with Arthur De Greef, José Sevenans, Martin Lunssens , and Lodewijk Mortelmans. He later transferred to the Antwerp Conservatory. In Antwerp, Poot studied privately with Paul Gilson, with whom he subsequently founded La Revue musicale belge in 1925. – MP website JacobTV Dutch ‘avant pop’ composer JacobTV (Jacob ter Veldhuis) started as a rock musician and studied composition and electronic music with Luctor Ponse and Willem Frederik Bon at the Groningen Conservatoire. He received the Composition Prize of the Netherlands in 1980. The press called him the ‘Jeff Koons of new music’ and his ‘coming-out’ as a composer of ultra-tonal music reached a climax with the video Oratorio Paradiso based on Dante’s Divina Commedia. “I pepper my music with sugar,” he says. You can not accuse him of complex music, but some of his pieces are so intense that people get freaked out by it… or simply blown away. JacobTV’s so-called Boombox repertoire, for live instruments with a grooving soundtrack based on speech melody, became internationally popular. With around 1000 worldwide performances a year, JacobTV is one of the most performed European composers. Pitch Black features spoken word by jazz icon Chet Baker. The title alludes to Chet Baker’s description of the prison cell he occupied in 1962. The audio track reproduces the voice of trumpet player Chet Baker from one of the last interviews. Baker talks about his past, his first audition with Charlie Parker, and playing without drums. Pitch Black is an early speech-melody based work, which was first recorded by the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet. In the eyes of his 18th-century contemporaries, Georg Philipp Telemann was the greatest living composer. Their performances, primarily held in the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall on the University of Victoria campus and in Greater Victoria, have transcended local boundaries to include performance venues up island, across the province of British Columbia, and, from 1987 to 2009, across the globe.The UVic Chamber Singers have a rich history of captivating audiences in over 140 cities and 30 countries on 6 continents. Recordings of their performances have been broadcast on platforms such as the CBC, University of California Radio, N.C.R.V. Radio in Holland, and the National Radios of China, Poland and Hungary. The choir has achieved notable success, including winners in the CBC Choral Competition and recording contributions that earned a Juno award in 2000. Bruce More retired after an impressive 37-year tenure as the longest serving conductor of the Chamber Singers. Despite his retirement, he remains actively involved by hosting alumni reunions and fostering connections that strengthen the choir’s prestigious legacy. For this 50th Anniversary concert, we are delighted to welcome back alumni singers representing various periods throughout the Chamber Singers’ history. These esteemed individuals, integral to the choir’s legacy and many of whom have contributed to BC’s musical heritage, will join the current choir in performing Healey Willan’s, Rise Up, My Love, with Bruce More returning to the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall stage. Last year, a generous contribution from one of our Chamber Singers alum led to the establishment of the Bruce More Legacy Fund at UVic, aimed at supporting the Chamber Singers and their future tours. We encourage you to explore the display in the lobby and consider making a donation to the Bruce More Legacy Fund, playing a vital role in the ongoing success and development of the UVic Chamber Singers. DR. ADAM JONATHAN CON Adam Con was born and raised on the traditional lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia. As a 4th generation descendent of the Chinese Diaspora in Canada, he is grateful to be able to embrace his rich cultural and spiritual lineage while living and working as a guest on the beautiful traditional lands of the Lək̓ʷəŋən and WSÁNEĆ peoples in Victoria, British Columbia. Dr. Con is Professor of Music in Music Education and Choral Conducting at UVic. He has conducted the UVic Chorus (est. 1969) since 2014 and currently conducts the Chamber Singers. In addition to music education methods courses, he coordinates Graduate Choral Conducting, and serves as graduate and undergraduate faculty supervisor for the accordion applied area. Using a kinesthetic approach to choral music, as inspired by mentor Rodney Eichenberger, Dr. Con uniquely combines this approach with Body Mapping, Alexander Technique and Tai Chi Chuan.This has led to invitations for performances, conducting, and workshop presentations at prestigious events worldwide. These include Foro Coro Americano in Argentina, I Foro Internacional De Educación Musical in Mexico, HCES Music Festival in Australia, Podium Choral Conducting Symposium, ISME The International Society for Music Education, the Canadian GALA Conference, the Canadian and the American Orff-Schulwerk Conferences, the Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia Provincial Music Educator’s Conferences, the British Columbia Choral Federation, the Unitarian Universalist Musicians National American Conference, the Ohio and Georgia State Music Educator’s Conferences and the American Choral Directors Association. Professionally, Dr. Con currently holds the position as Artistic Director of the Capriccio Vocal Ensemble, Victoria. For Choral Canada, he is chair of the ADEI (Access, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Advisory and is an active board member. Additionally, Dr. Con serves as an executive board member for the Coalition for Music Education in British Columbia, actively advocating for equitable access to quality music education in K-12 schools. Program Notes 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson The 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson is a song cycle written by Aaron Copland, using the text of twelve poems by American poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). Composed in New York between 1949-1950, these songs center around no singular theme. Instead, they follow the subjects Emily Dickinson primarily wrote about: life, death, nature, and eternity. The seventh and the twelfth songs are the only two selections that relate thematically. Copland weaves the pieces together to create a stunning arc of music that has given the songs, and Dickinson’s words, their own unique personality. Except for number twelve, each piece is dedicated to one of Copland’s composer friends. ‘’Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille’’ (‘’The Doll Song’’) Also known as Olympia’s Aria, The Doll Song is an aria for coloratura soprano from Jacques Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). Olympia is a wind-up doll who has caught the eye of Hoffmann, who, not realizing she is a doll, falls deeply in love with her. Despite encountering some mechanical issues along the way, Olympia dazzles him at a party with her brilliant aria ‘’Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille’’. Based on three short stories by E.T. A. �Hoffmann (1776-1822), who also happens to be the protagonist of the story, Offenbach’s opéra fantastique tells the story of Hoffmann’s three unfortunate love affairs, Olympia’s being told in Act two. ‘’Tornami a Vagheggiar’’ Alcina, written by Handel in 1735, is a Baroque opera about a seductive sorceress, Alcina, who lures men to her island with her magic. A young woman named Bradamante disguises herself as her brother ‘Ricciardo” and arrives on the island to rescue her fiancé Ruggiero. There they encounter Alcina’s sister, Morganna, who instantly falls in love with Ricciardo. This aria is sung at the end of Act 1, by Morganna, who is passionately expressing her love for Ricciardo (still Bradamante in disguise). Concerto for Coloratura Soprano Op. 82 Andante Composed by Reinhold Gliere in 1943, the first movement of this concerto (also known as the andante section) is a vocalise normally accompanied by orchestra with the coloratura soprano as the soloist. Vocalises are musical compositions consisting of the singing of melody with vowel songs. The difference between a vocalise and other repertoire with text is that within a vocal ease the singer has more room to act as another instrument, weaving in and out with the orchestra. Typically the Andante section, which is more sweeping and melodic, is followed by the Allegro section, which shows off the brilliance of the coloratura voice. ‘’Fierce Night’’ Jonathan Dove’s opera Flight (1998) tells the story of a group of strangers who meet at an airport. When all flights are grounded due to a violent electrical storm, the traveller’s hidden desires are slowly revealed as they wait out their cancelled flights. This aria is sung by the Controller, who is shouting her rage at the storm, and the eerily full airport. ‘‘Der Hirt auf dem Felsen‘‘ Also known in English as ‘’The Shepherd on the Rocks’’, Franz Schubert scored this Lied for soprano, clarinet, and piano. Schubert composed this piece in 1828 during the final months of his life. Schubert paints a picture of a Shepherd who is yearning for his lost love. This piece is split into three different sections that describe the Shepherd’s heartbreak. In the first section, the Shepherd is looking into the alpine valley and is reflecting on how lonely he is.
