Maya (paraphrased)
After performing the composition in its original form—emulating a Baroque double, that is, an ornamented repetition—it will be played again in a paraphrased and spatially expanded manner, transforming it into a sound-theatre
experience.

Galina Ustvolskaya
(1919-2006)
Galina Ustvolskaya “died in 2006 having created one of the 20th century’s most brutally, brilliantly uncompromising
corpuses of work. Ustvolskaya said she agreed with Schumann that “the best method of talking about music is to
be silent about it”. In her case, there’s a truth to that dictum because of her music’s sheer, brutalising power: it has a
terrifying and transcendent physicality; the inescapability of an asteroid firing into earth; an elementality that’s both
horrifying and thrilling […] Dona Nobis Pacem, is written for piccolo, tuba, and piano, a combination that opens up
abyssal gaps between the ranges of the instruments, sounding out a musical void into which the instruments seem

Red over Black
“The potential of this unusual instrumentation […] came into focus for me when I saw the Mark Rothko painting
Light Red over Black (1957,Tate Modern, London). The dark lower part of the painting, offset by the light and bright
upper part, gave me the structural inspiration for the music, which consists of three different ways of travelling from
dark to light, and from low to high.
Red over Black was jointly commissioned by the BBC and the Royal Philharmonic Society and premiered by Martin
Frost, Pierre Lenert and Cedric Tiberghien on August 14th 2006 at the Cadogan Hall London as part of the
BBC Proms Chamber Music series.”(Ian Wilson, 2007)
Screams and Whispers
In the course WRIT 420, students collaboratively produce a short film. Its soundtrack comprises sounds and soundscapes produced and recorded by the Sonic Lab. Although the official screening is scheduled at the PTY on
April 12, a pre-cut version of the film will be shown in a unique setting. Alongside the recorded soundtrack, the Sonic
Lab will perform a live “overdub” of the film with sounds and soundscapes that intensify the narrative.
Movie credits on the screen.
Real-time paraphrase to the soundtrack of the short film made by WRIT 420 students.
Official full screening on April 12th, 6pm.
