Taking a break can modulate the pace (rev-matching). Through the Forest and Beyond the Trees, Halle Paton Through the Forest and Beyond the Trees embarks on a sonic expedition through a dark, uncertain, and ever-shifting landscape. The use of sudden dynamic and textural changes are explored to elicit tense, eerie, and sometimes frantic environments, while the mixture of varying rhythmic figures creates the sense of never quite knowing what is surrounding you. Written for low string quartet, the inclusion of a double bass and an additional cello aids in creating a dark atmosphere as the piece journeys through the depths of the forest. proximity [in reflection], Megan Harton proximity [in reflection] is a site-specific piece for a spatialized chamber ensemble in the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall at the University of Victoria. Inspired by the interplay of reflections and the proximity of performers in the space, the composition explores the acoustical properties of resonance and spatial characteristics within the hall. Furthermore, it mirrors the composer's journey of relocating across Canada to the west coast, where the notion of distance from the familiar also resonates. Themes of contemplation and transition permeate the composition, inviting listeners to engage the nuanced relationship between sound and space.
