<text>Join us for this rare opportunity to experience one of the most iconic works of the Baroque period in the hands of a master interpreter. Minsoo Sohn, celebrated for his deep musical insight and technical brilliance, has captivated audiences worldwide with his interpretations of Bach. His performance of the Goldberg Variations, a work that demands both intellectual rigor and emotional sensitivity, will be a highlight of our concert season. Sohn’s 2011 Honens-label recording of the Goldberg Variations has been described as a “beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation,” (New York Times)

Originally composed for the harpsichord, the Goldberg Variations consists of an aria followed by 30 variations. It is widely regarded as one of Bach’s most complex and profound compositions, exploring a wide range of emotions and musical ideas. Sohn’s interpretation promises to reveal the work’s intricate architecture while also conveying its deep spiritual and emotional dimensions.</text>

<text>The first concert of the UVic Wind Symphony and the UVic Symphony Orchestra’s 2024/25 season kicks off another exciting year of collaborations.

With Wind Symphony works by Philip Sparke, Robert Buckley, Thierry Deleruyelle, Sally Greenaway, and a world premiere commission composed by UVic Music Education student Eilish McAree, the UVic Wind Symphony ‘s program celebrates the uninhibited approach these composers have taken in their writing.

The UVic Symphony Orchestra (UViSO) opens the season with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 — a masterpiece that marks a turning point in classical music. Composed during a time of personal turmoil, this work is a testament to Beethoven’s resilience and creative power. The symphony is filled with energetic rhythms, lyrical melodies, and bold harmonies that will captivate your heart and mind.</text>

The UVic School of Music is thrilled to welcome mezzo-soprano Marion Newman as the newest member of the voice faculty with a special concert performed by our renowned voice instructors. The centrepiece of the program will be Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes, Op. 52. Originally composed for informal music-making among friends — a practice common in the 19th century — this collection consists of 18 songs for vocal quartet (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and piano four-hands. The texts are drawn from a collection of folk-like poems, originally published by Georg Friedrich Daumer in his book Polydora. Despite their simplicity, the songs are infused with Brahms’ trademark emotional depth, exploring themes of love, longing, and the complexities of relationships.

Critically acclaimed and award-winning mezzo-soprano Marion Newman is Kwagiulth and Stó:lō First Nations with English, Irish and Scottish heritage. Marion was born in Bella Coola and grew up in Sooke, BC, immersed in and embraced by her community and culture. She is one of Canada’s most accomplished singers in repertoire ranging from Charpentier to Cusson and operatic roles, including Carmen and Rosina in The Barber of Seville. Nominated for a Dora Award for her leading role in the world premiere of Shanawdithit (Nolan/Burry) with Toronto’s Tapestry Opera, Ian Ritchie wrote, “She invests her character with towering dignity and courage.”</text>
