Paynter �B I O G RA P H I E S Dr. Michael Keddy is Music Director of the University of Victoria Don Wright Symphonic Winds and The Greater Victoria Concert Band (Senior Band). He recently served as guest conductor for the Civic Orchestra of Victoria. He currently teaches Music Education and Post-Degree Profes sional Program courses at the University of Victoria where he completed a PhD in Educational Studies (Music Educa tion/Conducting) under the supervision of Dr. Gerald King. He was recently appointed Chair of Student Chapters for the Canadian Music Educators’ Association. Prior to his time in Victoria, Dr. Keddy completed a Master’s Degree (Wind Conducting) with Dr. Dale Lonis at the University of Manitoba, and served as Head of Performing Arts at Parry Sound High School in Parry Sound, Ontario, where ensembles under his direction have consistently been praised for their exceptional musicality. Dr. Keddy completed the Graduate Diploma in Conducting from the University of Calgary, conducted and performed in Europe as Associate Conductor (Concert Band) and Music Director (Jazz Band) of the Ontario Youth Concert Band. He has adjudicated and provided numerous music clinics at many festivals and venues throughout Canada, including Music Director and Music Education Clinician at Camp Musical d’Asbestos in Asbestos, Québec. As a percussionist, Dr. Keddy taught as a member of the faculty at the University of Manitoba and performed in a variety of venues, from solo performer at Buckingham Palace to Symphony Orchestras to World Champion Drum and Bugle Corps. Brandon Chaplin is the Assistant Conductor for the Don Wright Symphonic Winds and is in his fourth year of studies in Music Education at the University of Victoria. Originally from Campbell River, Brandon now calls Victoria home though his family has since moved to a less temperate climate in Calgary, AB. Brandon is actively involved with the University of Victoria Student Music Educators’ Associa tion and is regularly called upon by them for his proficiency using sound equipment and other technology resources. This past summer, Brandon was thrilled be a part of the University of Toronto “Wind Conductor’s Symposium” hosted by Dr. Gillian McKay, Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, and guest conductor Dr. Robert Taylor from the University of British Columbia. Elgar Pomp and Circumstance March No. 2, Op. 39 �B I O G RA P H I E S Elizabeth Clarke Originally from Fort McMurray, Alberta, Elizabeth Clarke is currently completing her MMus in piano performance at the University of Victoria under the direction of Professor Arthur Rowe. She completed her undergraduate studies with Dr. Milton Schlosser at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus in 2013, and upon graduating received both the Augustana Medal and a Governor General’s Silver Medal from the University of Alberta for top academic achievement. In 2013 Elizabeth was the recipient of a Johann Strauss Scholarship from the University of Alberta’s Wirth Institute which funded summer study at the Wiener Meisterkurse in Vienna, Austria. She has also participated in summer study programs at the Tuckamore chamber music festival in Newfoundland, the Orford Arts Centre in Québec, and the Nice International Summer Music Academy in France. She is the recipient of a graduate scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and her resulting research paper, “The Piano Quartet in Canada”, has been published on the website of the Canadian Music Centre. Evan Hesketh Evan Hesketh began studying violin at age seven with Yasuko Eastman, who also introduced him to the viola a few years later. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria, where he studied violin with Ann Elliott-Goldschmid and viola with Joanna Hood and Yariv Aloni. Further studies led to a Master of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of Robert Vernon, Jeffrey Irvine, and Kirsten Docter. Evan has played in masterclasses for Pinchas Zukerman, James Dunham, Roger Tapping, Atar Arad, and Steven Dann. An award-winning chamber musician, Evan was a member of the Ariadne String Quartet, prizewinners at the 2012 Fischoff Competition, and the 2012 Coleman Competition. Quartet studies have been with members of the Lafayette, Cleveland, Cavani, Miro, Juilliard, Brentano, and Schoenberg quartets. Currently, Evan studies conducting at the University of Victoria on a full scholarship with Ajtony Csaba. He has conducted the UVic Orchestra, Victoria Civic Orchestra, and festival orchestras in Maine and New Hampshire. �Ajtony Csaba Ajtony Csaba, born in Cluj, Romania, began his studies on the cello and later piano and composition in Budapest at the Academy of Music. He began studying conducting in Vienna and Budapest simultaneously with Tamás Gál, András Ligeti, Uroš Lajovic, Peter Eötvös, Istvan Dénes and Zoltán Pesko. He was awarded many prizes as a conductor and composer, and was a semi-finalist in the first competition for opera in Cluj, Romania. He has had numerous concerts in Hungary and Austria with orchestras including UMZE, Sinfonietta Baden, Webern Sinfonietta, Savaria Symphonic Orchestra, and Danube Symphonic Orchestra. In the 2003/04 season he was the assistant conductor and tutor of the Academy Orchestra Budapest and in 2005 was invited to be the assistant conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra with their contemporary program. He made his conducting debut in the Viennese Musikverein with the RSO (Radio-Symphonieorchester, Wien) in 2007. Since 2006 he has served as the chief conductor of the Central European Chamber Orchestra, and led the orchestra on a tour in China (performances including halls in Shenzhen, Lanzhou and in the Parliament in Beijing), with return engagements in 2007 and 2009. Ajtony Csaba has been the leader of the Vienna Jeunesse Choir since 2007. In 2008 he conducted at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music and was assistant to Peter Eötvös at the Salzburg Festspiele. In 2008 he conducted the EuroMed Youth Orchestra in Damaskus, Syria. Grant us peace. �PROGRAM NOTES Contributed by Louis Ranger I was honoured and delighted when faculty colleagues of the UVic School of Music expressed interest in observing my impending retirement with a Faculty Chamber Music Series concert consisting entirely of music of my choosing. Truth be told, a more accurate theme for this concert would be “music that I find interesting and rewarding that does not get performed frequently enough.” However, this seemed a little awkward. These program notes offer facts about the pieces, but I also include a few comments on why this music is particularly significant for me. (Personal reflection in program notes might be thought of as somewhat self-indulgent, but I don’t retire that often…) Alfredo Casella was a highly respected Italian composer, conductor, and pianist during the first half of the 20th Century. He was introduced in North America conducting a concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and was the first conductor of the Boston Pops. The Serenata is a lighthearted Neo-classical work, intended to entertain. However, it is well constructed, original, and challenging for the players. An indication of the respect that Casella enjoyed is the fact that this piece tied for first place in a competition organized by the Philadelphia Musical Fund Society. (The prize was $10,000—the largest sum of money that had ever been offered as a prize for a chamber composition.) Incredibly, the prize was split between Casella and Bartók, who had entered his String Quartet No. 3. I became aware of this piece when I had the good fortune to study with brass players of the Boston Symphony in the 1960s. A couple of them were chronologically enhanced enough to remember Casella’s work with the orchestra and spoke highly of his musicianship. One of the reasons I decided to become a musician was the excitement I felt when first hearing the great ballet music from Igor Stravinsky’s Russian Period (ca. 1907-1919). The Firebird, Petroushka, and The Rite of Spring compelled me to cloister myself in the practice room; I had to be able to participate in performances of those pieces one day. Works from his later, Neo-Classical Period (ca. 1920-1954), such as Symphony of Psalms, Orpheus, Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments, and the Mass heard this evening, were some of the many pieces from this period that were likewise inspirational. With tonight’s presentation of In Memorium Dylan Thomas and The Owl and the Pussy-Cat we hear two examples from his final Serial Period (1954-1968). In Memorium was the first piece in which Stravinsky fully utilized serial techniques of composition that had been pioneered by Arnold Schoenberg. The Owl and the Pussy-Cat was the very last piece he composed. Stravinsky admired the work of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, one of the towering figures in 20th Century verse. The two had planned to collaborate in the creation of an opera. Stravinsky said that Thomas envisioned a work that would depict “the rediscovery of our planet following an atomic misadventure.” Anticipating a lengthy collaboration, Stravinsky built an extension on his house to accommodate the poet. Tragically, Thomas died suddenly in New York while en route to join the composer in Hollywood. Deeply moved, Stravinsky set “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” for tenor and string quartet, framed by short instrumental dirges with trombones joining the strings. As he had done throughout his career, Stravinsky absorbed compositional techniques developed by others and used them to create music with �character readily identifiable as his own. In Memorium is constructed upon a series of just five tones, rather than on a twelve-tone series, as developed by Schoenberg. When I learned of the existence of this piece I had already long admired not only the work of Stravinsky, but also that of Dylan Thomas; I was fascinated with the piece even before I heard it. The Owl and the Pussy-Cat was a gift to Stravinsky’s wife, Vera, who was very fond of the poem. It was the first English verse she had learned by heart. It might seem ironic that the composer of The Rite of Spring would finish his long, profoundly productive career with setting of a short nonsense poem. However, I have come to hear the piece as a crafty final gift to all. The illogical tale of the fowl and the feline is actually rather mysterious and compelling. Stravinsky’s music seems almost random at first listening, but like the rhyme, it is very tightly structured. It is an absolutely strict twelve-tone work. In his Themes and Conclusions, Stravinsky wrote, “The piano octaves form a syncopated canonic voice as well as a double mirror.” (Analysis, anyone? Who can resist a palindrome? Or for that matter, a dirge?) The music of Samuel Barber is deeply rooted in traditional forms and tonality. It is characteristically lyrical and expressive. He was often criticized as a reactionary, but his angular melodic lines, rhythmic energy, and use of dissonance places him firmly in the 20th Century. His large body of work includes music in nearly every genre. Originally written in 1945 for a solo trio of flute, oboe, and trumpet with strings, the Capricorn Concerto was finally arranged for the solo trio with piano accompaniment by Kurt Frederick in 1997. The piece was named after Barber’s home in Mt. Kisco, New York, which was a haven for artists from many disciplines. The instrumentation is the same as Bach’s Second Brandenburg Concerto, and the homage to Bach is also apparent in the contrapuntal writing and form reminiscent of a Baroque Concerto Grosso. Nonetheless, syncopated rhythms and 20th Century harmonies make clear the composer’s appreciation of American music of his own era. The Stravinsky Mass is one of only a handful of pieces that the composer was not commissioned to write. In 1927, he rejoined the Russian Orthodox Church, acknowledging values of his Russian upbringing. After discovering some Masses of Mozart in a second hand book store in Los Angeles, his interest in writing a Mass grew. He wrote a traditional Catholic Mass because “I wanted my Mass to be used liturgically, an outright impossibility as far as the Russian Orthodox Church was concerned, as Orthodox tradition proscribes musical instruments in its services.” He also said “One composes a march to facilitate marching men, so with my Credo I hope to provide an aid to the text. The Credo is the longest movement. There is much to believe.” In contrast to Masses of Romantic tradition, Stravinsky’s could be perceived as severe. He said that he wanted to write “cold music” that would appeal “directly to the spirit.” In my view, the Mass succeeds in appealing to the spirit directly and powerfully. Every performer in this evening’s concert has a current or former teaching affiliation with the school, or is a current or former student. Without exception, everyone I approached about participating in this concert readily agreed, for which I am most grateful. Andantino grazioso IV. Allegro Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) �BIOGRAPHIES Shawn Earle is a clarinetist, chamber musician, and music educator. He has performed throughout North America and Europe with various orchestras and chamber ensembles, as well as delivering solo recitals. Shawn’s repertoire ranges from traditional to contemporary and he is dedicated to the creation and performance of Canadian music. He completed his Master of Music at the University of Victoria with Patricia Kostek, and is presently working towards a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of British Columbia. Shawn is also passionate about music education and has taught numerous clinics, master classes, and a private studio. Shawn has received several honours for his playing including a British Columbia Arts Council Grant, Canada Council Grant, Nova Scotia Talent Trust Award, and many academic accolades. Currently Shawn lives and works in Vancouver. Laine Longton has been playing the cello since age 5. Currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of British Columbia under Eric Wilson, Laine holds a Master’s from the University of Illinois with Dmitry Kouzov and a BMus from the University of Victoria with Pamela Highbaugh-Aloni. Laine has also studied with Gail O’Riordan in Victoria and with Martin Rummel, Guido Schieffen, and violinist Denes Zsigmondy in Germany. Last summer Laine was a member of the National Academy Orchestra of Canada under the direction of Maestro Boris Brott. Laine is currently playing in Musical Theatre productions in Vancouver, is the Contemporary Players Teaching Assistant at UBC, and is an extra cellist with the Vancouver Symphony. A recent winner of the Vancouver Women’s Musical Society Bursary competition, pianist Chia-Hui Clare Yuan is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of British Columbia under the guidance of world famous Canadian pianist, Professor Jane Coop. Upon winning numerous awards and scholarships, Clare received her Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music, New York, where she studied with Russian pianist Dr. Arkady Aronov and her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria under the guidance of pianist Eva Solar Kinderman. Clare was invited as a soloist to perform with the Metropolitan Philharmonic of New York Orchestra in 2009. She has been a frequent guest on FairChild Radio, as well as an adjudicator at local competitions. She is actively involved in music, and was recently invited as a guest conductor to Vancouver Orchestra Club’s 2013 winter season and 2014 spring season concert. �EMERGING ARTISTS ALUMNI SERIES Calling all UVic School of Music alumni! (solo artists, bands, chamber groups, composers) We are now accepting proposals from School of Music alumni for our Emerging Artists Alumni Series. We know how hard it can be to finance a gig and are opening the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall doors for 1–2 concerts each semester dedicated to showcasing the talents of alumni in the early stages of their careers. Successful applicants will be provided with: • Access to the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall for a concert and rehearsal. • Event staff (ushers, stage manager, recording technician) • Recording of the concert • Event promotion in the School of Music brochure & on our website. Admission to concerts will be by donation and proceeds will be divided 50/50 between performer(s) and the School of Music. Apply to concert@uvic.ca with the following: • Proposed program and list of performers (minimum 60 minute program) • Bio of each alumni performer (250 words or less each) • High resolution photo(s) • Links to website, audio, video, social media pages (if available) • Willingness to appear in a short profile video for use on the School of Music website. Join core faculty artists of VISI in a celebration of this remarkable educational institute, which has been a groundbreaking center for Art Song study, performance, and creation for so many musicians throughout Canada and abroad since 2007. This concert is just one of several special events being programmed by VISI to raise public awareness of the Institute’s work.
