Con Brio Dr. Gerald King, conductor �b i o g ra p h i e s Dr. Gerald King Conductor, University of Victoria Wind Symphony Dr. Gerald King is Professor of Music at the University of Victoria where he serves as the conductor of the UVic Wind Symphony and is the Head of Music Education. Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s most respected conductors, adjudicators, educators, and keynote speakers, Dr. King is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. In 2003 he was elected into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, when he served as Guest Conductor of The United States Army Band (Pershing’s Own), in Washington, DC. In 2012 he was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of the internationally recognized Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble in celebration of the ensemble’s 30th anniversary. As well, he received the BC Music Educators’ Association Honorary Life Award and was also inducted into Phi Beta Mu (International Fraternity for Wind Band Conductors). In March 2014 he was chosen to conduct the Ostwald/Sousa award winning composition, Pale Blue on Deep by American composer, Aaron Perrine, with the University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble. Also, in 2014, Dr. King was appointed as the International member of the Western International Band Clinic University Collegiate Advisory Board. A former student of internationally renowned conductor, Maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Dr. King’s professional career has taken him throughout Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Hong Kong, Australia, and Switzerland. Dr. King’s conducting appearances with regional, national, international honor and professional ensembles have been praised for performance quality, artistry, and creativity. Throughout his career he has been a champion of new music, premiering over 30 compositions. Dr. King is a Yamaha Artist Conductor. �Lieutenant (N) Matthew Clark, CD Commanding Officer / Director of Music Since assuming command of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in October 2011, Lieutenant navy Matthew Clark’s artistic vision, coupled with his passion for symphonic wind music and deep regard for military music tradition, has inspired a number of recording projects and innovative collaborations with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir, the University of Victoria’s music and theatre departments, and the Victoria Symphony. Lt (N) Clark and the Naden Band recently commissioned and performed a new work from Ian MacDougall and will continue to encourage new Canadian music in the future. A graduate of the University of Toronto, Lt(N) Clark studied conducting and wind ensemble repertoire extensively with Dr. Gillian MacKay. He has also worked with notable wind ensemble specialists Eugene Corporon, Jack Stamp, and Craig Kirchhoff. An equally gifted euphonium soloist, Lt(N) Clark’s 2007 solo recording for the Arktos Label, entitled EUPHONIUM, has been featured on CBC Radio and in the British Bandsman, the longest-running international publication of brass bands. Title A name given to the resource Wind Symphony Description An account of the resource UVic's Wind Symphony is recognized as one of the premiere performing wind ensembles in the Pacific Northwest. The ensemble is in constant demand to perform at festivals and conferences. Recently, the Wind Symphony represented Canada at the Annual WesternInternational Band Conference in Seattle in November, 2002. As well, the Wind Symphony has been a featured guest ensemble at the B.C. Music Educators' Conference. The Wind Symphony provides opportunities for all wind and percussion players in the School. Its repertoire includes transcriptions of orchestral works, concerti, chamber ensembles, large symphonic band works and new music for the concert band. The Wind Symphony regularly features student, faculty and guest solo artists, and has given numerous Canadian and world premieres of contemporary works. Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude Sonata in B minor Franz Liszt (1811–1886) �BIOGRAPHY Canadian pianist Arthur Rowe is a critically acclaimed recitalist, soloist with orchestra and chamber musician. Touring annually across North America, he has received enthusiastic reviews from his performances in New York, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Seattle, San Diego, as well as in venues in Europe and New Zealand. Reviewing a solo recital in London England, The London Times spoke of his “unusual clarity of articulation”, and “poetry of expression”, and David Burge, writing in The San Diego Tribune said, “Rowe is a marvelous pianist…even when he is pushed to the limit by extreme virtuosic demands...he can concentrate all of his considerable talents on vital matters of phrasing, tone and ensemble”. Arthur Rowe has been heard regularly on radio broadcasts in Canada and the United Staes, and has recorded with various artists for the Crystal, ebs, Innova, GM and Fanfare labels. In 2007, he released an all Schubert recording on the Centaur label. Fanfare magazine’s review says, “Rowe’s reading (of the posthumous B flat Sonata) is one of the most beautiful I have heard… This kind of expression cannot be taught; it is in the bloodstream and the soul.” A highly respected chamber musician, Mr. Rowe regularly collaborates with artists and chamber ensembles across North America. He has been a guest artist at summer festivals in Blossom, Interlochen, Niagara, Santa Fe and Seattle, as well as in France, New Zealand, and Yugoslavia. While at Indiana University, he began his long association with violinist William Preucil, Concertmaster of The Cleveland Ochestra, with whom he has concertized for more than three decades. Mr. Rowe has recently performed in New York for the Bargemusic series, at Oberlin College, and in Washington State with Estonian bassoonist Martin Kuuskmann. Performances in 2014/15 include concerts with the Dover Quartet, recent winners of the Banff International String Quartet competition, the Linden Quartet, cellist Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Jonathan Crow, Concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony, and William Preucil, Concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra. Having previously held positions at the University of Iowa and the University of Western Ontario, Arthur Rowe resides in Victoria, where he is Professor of Piano at the University of Victoria and the Artistic Director of the Victoria Summer Music Festival.
