He has been aptly referred to as a “trumpet personality” and “one of Canada’s top trumpet players and jazz musicians” by CBC Radio. At the University of Victoria, Patrick teaches courses in Jazz Theory, Jazz Pedagogy, Jazz History, Music Business, Improvisation, and Arranging, in addition to directing the Jazz Orchestra and Vikes Band. An in-demand session player not bound by genre, Patrick can be heard on more than 50 recordings and two critically acclaimed solo albums: Still No Word (2008) and Hold Out (2005). Patrick recently performed at Carnegie Hall with tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and drummer Steve Smith. He has also performed with Great Big Sea, Mickey Dolenz (The Monkees), Fred Penner, Plants and Animals, Mike Murley, Phil Dwyer, Uri Caine, and many others. His new record Heart of Stone will be released in 2015 and features Bill Brennan (piano), Mike Downes (bass) and Mike Billard (drums). Patrick balances life as a performer with a strong dedication to academics. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Performance at the University of Toronto. His primary research interest is how improvisation, particularly collective improvisation in organizations, can help students negotiate situations of tension and anxiety, inside and outside of music. Patrick also holds an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from York University and a B.Mus from Memorial University. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at Memorial. Patrick is a regular contributor to Canadian Musician magazine and an active clinician throughout North America. On a recent sabbatical, he was a Visiting Scholar at Massey College at the University of Toronto where he began work on a history of jazz music in Newfoundland. Patrick has composed music for film, television, radio, and theatre. In 2010, he was commissioned by the CBC to compose and record ‘Well Enough Alone’, a multimovement jazz suite which acknowledges the 60th anniversary of Newfoundland’s confederation with Canada. Patrick regularly creates original live soundtracks for silent films and video games. Outside of music, Patrick is an up-and-coming stand up comedy talent. He’ll be appearing at Playtime Gaming in Campbell River on September 24 and Courtenay on September 25. The veal is NOT recommended. Follow him on twitter @paddyjoeboyle �Ian McDougall Ian McDougall was born in Calgary, Canada, and grew up in Victoria, leaving there in 1960 to tour in Great Britain with the John Dankworth Band. He returned to Canada in 1962 and began a lengthy career as a freelance player, composer and arranger in Vancouver and in Toronto where, until 1991, he was also the lead and solo trombonist with Rob McConnell’s Juno and Grammy award-winning Boss Brass. Two suites composed by Ian have been recorded by that group – The Pellet Suite (The Boss Brass Again, UMB GEN1-12), and The Blue Serge Suit(e) (Brassy and Sassy, Concord Jazz, CCD 4508). Ian also was lead trombone and composer/arranger for The Brass Connection, who won the Juno award for best Jazz album in 1982. Since the early 1980’s McDougall has become even more involved in composition, and his works have been performed by the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, the Lafayette String Quartet, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Rob McConnell Tentet, and the Toronto Cantata Chorus,among others. Ian now resides in Victoria, where he continues to play, compose, and teach. He taught trombone, composition, and jazz studies at the University of Victoria, leaving there in 2003 as Professor Emeritus. Ian was awarded the University of Victoria’s “Distinguished Alumni” award in 2004. The past decade has included tours in Canada and abroad, both as a soloist and with his groups, to Ireland, Scotland, Australia, Denmark, Holland, the USA, Germany, and England, where Ian was music director for two BBC Big Band broadcasts. Over the years, Ian has been invited to be a performer and clinician at three International Trombone Association conventions, in Nashville, Rochester, and in Las Vegas. Also, in the past decade, Ian has been featured as leader on six CDs. His latest double CD is entitled In a Sentimental Mood, and features the music of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington with Ian joined by his quartet. www.ianmcdougall.com �Wendell Clanton Wendell Clanton is the resident saxophone teacher and Vocal Jazz Ensemble Director at the University of Victoria. Clanton studied under Dr. Frederick L. Hemke and has been a guest performer with the National Conservatory at Bordeaux Saxophone Ensemble, The Supremes, and others. He has performed concerts across North America and the UK and is a member of Three Piece Suit jazz trio, The Midnights, Vis à Vis Saxophone Quartet and The Kingmixers. Eugene Dowling For twenty-five years, Eugene Dowling was Principal Tubist with the Victoria Symphony and has been a faculty member of the School of Music, University of Victoria for over thirty years. His recording The English Tuba on the Fanfare/Pro Arte label was nominated for a Juno Award and received a number of favourable reviews and North America-wide radio play. Under Dowling’s direction, the Victoria TUBACHRISTMAS ensemble has raised thousands of dollars for local charities and has been featured in such diverse venues as CBC TV’s The Journal and with the Victoria Symphony Christmas Pops program. Eugene Dowling is a Yamaha Artist. Ross Macdonald Ross Macdonald is a bassist based in Victoria, British Columbia. His musical skills have taken him around the world, playing music in Dubai at the 7 star Burj al Arab, the tallest hotel in the world, and cruising on the world’s only residence ship, The World. He currently plays the bass full-time with the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in Victoria. www.rossmacdonald.com Scott MacInnes Scott MacInnes is the trombone instructor at the University of Victoria, and Principal Bass Trombone with the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra. She has studied privately in London, England and New York City. Marc Patsula Marc Patsula is a horn player who exists on a higher spiritual plane than most mortals. He is also a jewelry designer, cornetist, gourmet chef, empathy, and dear friend to anyone he meets. Along with Patrick Boyle and Joanna Hood, he ensures that Constance Avenue is the most artistically diverse street in all of Esquimalt. www.jewelry-by-marc.com Tom Vickery Tom Vickery remains a leading figure on the West Coast jazz scene. Equally talented on both trumpet and piano, in 1993 he participated in a national tour of Canada with the Canadian Forces Jazz Quintet for the Department of National Defense. For the past 10 years, he has played with the award-winning Dixieland Express Jazz Band, host band for the annual ‘TerrifVic Jazz Party’. The Tom Vickery Trio has been the house band at Hermann’s Jazz Club in Victoria for more than 14 years. He played in Hugh Fraser’s (international) Jazz Workshop Orchestra for two years, and has been the featured pianist with vocalist Barbara Blair’s “Jazz Affair” group for the past 10 years. She has performed with the Victoria Symphony, the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria, the Vancouver Island Symphony, and the YouTube Symphony Orchestra 2011 at the Sydney Opera House in Australia. In June 2014, Sarah received the Victoria Medal in Fine Arts for top student in the UVic Faculty of Fine Arts. She was the winner of the 2013 University of Victoria Bach Competition with the Sixth Cello Suite, and was a finalist in the 2013 UVic Concerto Competition with Hindemith’s Der Schwanendreher. Sarah is an advocate of new music and has performed in the premiere of many new works, including a performance with the Lafayette String Quartet of The Space Between Us by American composer David Jaffe. In July, as part of the Pacific String Quartet, she performed a concert of new music by students and recent graduates of the UVic Composition program. In addition to her love of classical music, Sarah performs regularly as a fiddler and folk singer. Sarah will be playing in several concerts with the Victoria Symphony, teaching at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and performing as often as possible. Since West My Friend was conceived in a Victoria café in 2009, they’ve emerged as a unique voice in the city’s music scene. Described as everything from indie-roots to chamber-folk, their acoustic blend of instruments and four-part harmonies challenges the conventions of popular music to create a performance that is both engaging and innovative. Songs are created through a collaborative process: well-crafted and clever lyrics, acrobatic mandolin riffs, flawless bass lines, and richly textured accordion combine as every member brings forward their own ideas and experiences. The wealth of musical experience and classical training in the group creates an interesting backdrop for their songwriting, allowing for levels of detail, intricacy, and counterpoint balanced with moments of simplicity. This sonically adventurous approach to music defines West My Friend as a key part of a growing movement of the new generation of grass-roots folk music taking place in Victoria, Vancouver and across British Columbia. West My Friend released their first full-length album Place in 2012, and it soon garnered multiple award nominations (including “Roots Album of the Year” and “Song of the Year” at the Vancouver Island Music Awards). Their second album, When The Ink Dries, was released in March 2014. It ranges in scope from intimate moments, featuring the four core musicians of the group, to rich orchestral arrangements that showcase the maturity, musicianship, and multi-instrumental abilities of each member. This is combined with guest musicians drawn from everywhere from the Victoria Symphony to Buena Vista Social Club. The record is a significant step forward for West My Friend; the group’s collaboration with Grammy award-winning producer Joby Baker (Alex Cuba, Cowboy Junkies) and Juno award-winner David TraversSmith (The Wailin’ Jennys, Oh Susannah) provides a strong underpinning of experience in folk-roots music for this promising young band. �Emerging Artists Alumni Series Calling all UVic School of Music alumni! She holds a B.Mus degree from Indiana University-Bloomington, and Masters in Music from University of the Arts (Philadelphia) where she was a student of Julius Baker. Snizek received her Doctorate of Musical Arts in April 2011 from UBCVancouver, and has served as the flute professor at the University of Victoria since September 2011. She has performed with a vast range of ensembles in the United States, England, Canada, France, the UK and Taiwan, including the Moody Blues and Roger Daltrey. Dr. Snizek won first prize in the Mid South Flute Competition (USA) and the University of the Arts concerto competition. She was also a second prize winner in the New York Flute Club competition and a winner in the ‘Flute Talk’ magazine competition. A sought after clinician and adjudicator, she has given master classes in the United States, Canada and Taiwan, and has recorded for HBO, ESPN’s “NFL Presents,” and Kindermusic international. BRuce vogt Among the elite of Canadian pianists, Bruce Vogt is a unique and dynamic performer. He appears regularly in concert within Canada, but has also inspired audiences in England, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Norway, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, China, and Japan. Born in Southern Ontario, Bruce completed his initial musical studies with Damjana Bratuz and Anton Kuerti. Later he studied in the United States, England, Switzerland, and Italy, working with a number of celebrated musicians including Gyorgy Sebok, Louis Kentner, Fou Ts’Ong, and Dario de Rosa. Bruce Vogt’s repertoire is extremely diverse, encompassing music from the sixteenth century to the present. He has consistently championed the music of contemporary composers, and has commissioned and premiered a number of new works by such Canadian luminaries as Murray Adaskin and Alfred Fisher. He is also an enthusiastic and dedicated performer on period instruments; one of his recordings, released in the fall of 2003, features music of Robert Schumann performed on a restored 1864 Erard. His other recordings include two volumes of the music of Franz Liszt, which have established for him an enviable reputation as a Liszt interpreter. Two new recordings of the music of Liszt were released in 2011 in honour of the bicentenary of this great composer. �Anne Grimm Dutch soprano Anne Grimm has been recognized internationally for her “captivating voice” (Globe and Mail) and “expressive technique” (ClassicsToday). On the concert stage she has toured Europe and recorded regularly with Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Ambronay, Salzburg) as well as with the Nederlandse Bachvereniging, the Amsterdamse Bachsolisten under Roy Goodman (Concertgebouw), the Rotterdams Philharmonic under Rozhdestvensky and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra under Christian Zacharias. She has been a soloist with multiple orchestra’s and groups in North America such as Tanglewood, the National Arts Center under Pinchas Zuckerman, Toronto’s Tafelmusik and the Victoria Symphony, and has recorded for Erato, Harmonia Mundi, NM Classics, Vanguard Classics, Troubadisc and Sony. In opera she has performed with the Netherlands Opera (Orfeo), European Baroque Orchestra (Samson & Dalila), National Reisopera (Die Zauberflote), at the Holland Festival and Toronto Masque Theater (King Arthur) and Pacific Opera Victoria (Semele). Wendell Clanton Wendell Clanton is the resident saxophone instructor and Vocal Jazz Ensemble Director at the University of Victoria. Clanton studied under Dr. Frederick L. Hemke and has been a guest performer with the National Conservatory at Bordeaux Saxophone Ensemble, The Supremes, and others. He has performed concerts across North America and the UK and is a member of Three Piece Suit jazz trio, The Midnights, Vis à Vis Saxophone Quartet and The Kingmixers. Kirk McNally Kirk McNally, Audio-Specialist/Recording Engineer at the University of Victoria, was born in Burlington, Ontario and studied music and sound recording at McGill University (B.Mus 1998, M.Mus 2000). His teachers included Gerald Danovitch, Wieslaw Woszczyk, George Massenburg and Steven Epstein. As a recording engineer he has worked with national and international artists including: R.E.M, Bryan Adams, Sloan, Matthew Good, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Aventa Ensemble. His research has been presented at the Art of Record Production Conference and supported by the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD).
