Dr. Michael Keddy is Music Director of the University

of Victoria Don Wright Symphonic Winds and The Greater

Victoria Concert Band (Senior Band). He recently served as

guest conductor for the Civic Orchestra of Victoria. He

currently teaches Music Education and Post-Degree Profes
sional Program courses at the University of Victoria where

he completed a PhD in Educational Studies (Music Educa
tion/Conducting) under the supervision of Dr. Gerald King.

He was recently appointed Chair of Student Chapters for

the Canadian Music Educators’ Association. Prior to his time
in Victoria, Dr. Keddy completed a Master’s Degree (Wind Conducting) with Dr.
Dale Lonis at the University of Manitoba, and served as Head of Performing Arts at
Parry Sound High School in Parry Sound, Ontario, where ensembles under his direction have consistently been praised for their exceptional musicality.
Dr. Keddy completed the Graduate Diploma in Conducting from the University of
Calgary, conducted and performed in Europe as Associate Conductor (Concert
Band) and Music Director (Jazz Band) of the Ontario Youth Concert Band. He
has adjudicated and provided numerous music clinics at many festivals and venues
throughout Canada, including Music Director and Music Education Clinician at Camp
Musical d’Asbestos in Asbestos, Québec.

Brandon Chaplin is the Assistant Conductor for the Don
Wright Symphonic Winds and is in his fourth year of
studies in Music Education at the University of Victoria.
Originally from Campbell River, Brandon now calls Victoria
home though his family has since moved to a less temperate climate in Calgary, AB. Brandon is actively involved with
the University of Victoria Student Music Educators’ Association and is regularly called upon by them for his proficiency
using sound equipment and other technology resources.

This past summer, Brandon was thrilled be a part of the University of Toronto
“Wind Conductor’s Symposium” hosted by Dr. Gillian McKay, Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds,
and guest conductor Dr. Robert Taylor from the University of British Columbia. This
workshop gave him additional insight into the world of the conductor which he is
thrilled to have further opportunity to explore with the Don Wright Symphonic
Winds under the direction of Dr. Michael Keddy.

Don Wright Endowment and the Don Wright Symphonic Winds
When Canadian music educator, composer, and philanthropist Don
Wright endowed $1,000,000 for Music Education at the University of
Victoria in 2004, a major initiative of this donation was to provide an
opportunity for all university students to play in an ensemble on campus. The University of Victoria Don Wright Symphonic Winds, funded
from the endowment, offers all members of the UVic community
and beyond, a performance-oriented environment without audition,
where they can learn ensemble techniques, gain important community
contacts, experience the value of ensemble playing in music education,
receive course credit for playing in the group, and have fun. The ensemble concentrates on educational and musical achievements while
providing a source of enjoyment for players and the audience. Music is
selected from a variety of sources, styles, and genres; customary for a
traditional symphonic wind ensemble.
We at UVic are honoured to continue Dr. Wright’s legacy of music
and education by providing performance opportunities for musicians
and presenting diverse concerts to the entire community.

Your contribution makes a difference!
The arts have always been dependent on the generosity of its
patrons, and a donation to the School of Music can make all the
difference to the future of our students. A scholarship of just
$500 a year can change a life forever.
For more information about our giving initiatives, please
contact Fine Arts Development Officer Karen Walker at
250-721-6305 or via email at kmwalker@uvic.ca.

PROGRAM NOTES
Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) commonly referred to as “Papa Haydn”
is often credited with the title, “father of the symphony and string quartet”.
Although he originated neither genres, his fifty-four years of development
and expansion of the symphony and string quartet established an important
contribution to the development of Western music. Haydn also composed
keyboard music, orchestral concerti, trios, and miscellaneous concert pieces.
In the vocal genre, he wrote solos and partsongs, folksong arrangements,
canons, music for plays, eight oratorios/cantatas, fourteen operas and fourteen masses.
The Mass in D was composed in the summer of 1798. Although Haydn was
dismissed in 1790 as Kapellmeister at the court of the noble Hungarian Esterhazy family, he was given a small pension which required him to compose
and direct a new mass to honour the name-day of Princess Marie Esterhazy.
The Mass in D is the third of six total name-day masses.
Haydn titled the Mass in D, Missa in Angustiis, (Mass for times of distress), but
how it became known as the (Lord) Nelson Mass is not clear. It has been
speculated that the work was performed for Admiral Lord Nelson and Lady
Hamilton when they visited Prince Esterhazy at Eisenstadt Castle in September of 1800. However, whether Nelson ever attended a performance of
the work has never been substantiated. The only two major historical events
that might shed some insight into the title include the Battle of the Nile
on August 1, 1798 when Nelson defeated Napolean in Egypt at the same
period when Haydn finished the Mass in D Minor. The other event was after
the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805 when the mass shortly became
known as the Nelson Mass. The Mass has also been titled in some editions as
the “Coronation” or “Imperial” mass which may simply be due to historical
error and misidentification of the masses.
Although written in the key of D minor to reflect a time of war and stress,
the purpose of the composition was to celebrate the name-day of Princess
Esterhazy. Hence, writing a sorrowful mass would have been inappropriate.
Haydn ends the mass uplifting the spirit in D major. Throughout the work,
there is a sense of excitement, triumph, victory and joy. The soprano solo
work throughout is often referred to as “fireworks” which add to the celebratory nature of the mass. The universal theme in the Nelson Mass of fear
and anxiety transforming to hopefulness and joy is an appropriate choice
for the 2015 UVic choral/orchestral work to reflect our societal struggle for
peace.

DEGREE RECITAL

In 1956, the same year that Halsey Stevens completed his Sonata for Trumpet and

Matthew MacLean, Trumpet

Piano, the Paris Conservatory had separate fall and spring concours for the first time;

Elizabeth Clarke, piano
Louise Hung, piano
Spencer Davis, piano
Liam Caveney, trombone
Trevor Hoy, bass trombone
Sam McNally, horn
Ian VanGils, trumpet

Chayne’s Trumpet Concerto No. 1 was the required piece for both the trumpet and cornet
classes. Originally composed for trumpet with string orchestra, Chaynes wrote the piano reduction of the work himself. The piece is rich in chromaticism and rhythmic complexity, and
was composed in response to a demand for new and challenging trumpet repertoire from the
great soloists in France at the time, including the legendary Maurice Andre, who premiered
the work.

Suite in D Major for Trumpet - Georg Friedrich Händel

influence on the independence of the New World, the formation of the Kingdom of Great

PROGRAM

Britain, and alliances with and against France, Georg Friedrich Händel wrote music during the
birth of European empires. This work, published in 1733, likely without Händel’s consent, features works for the trumpet derived from various of his compositions. The Overture comes
from his famed Water Music, while the Menuetto and Bourrée, two popular French dance

The following are liner notes written by composer David Sampson:
Morning Music for brass quintet was written during the summer of 1986 for the American
Brass Quintet. It is a sequel to a previous work of mine titled In Memoriam: W.E.S. for woodwind quintet written in 1981 and premiered by the Dorian Wind Quintet. The subject of that
piece was the murder of my brother, William Evan Sampson, by the Ku Klux Klan and American
Nazis in 1979.
Morning Music deals with my thoughts and feelings seven years later. As you will hear, the anguish over the death is as intense as ever, but strength and hope will gradually emerge from
the despair. The work is one movement with clearly delineated sections ending with a fastpaced coda. I have dedicated Morning Music to my mother, Betty Sampson, whose optimism
and resiliency have been an inspiration to me.

composed Intrada, dedicating it to fellow trumpeter Theo Laanen. Ketting composed the
work before studying composition formally, and had only taken composition lessons from his
father, Piet Ketting. The piece alternates between two moods: Ketting provides the markings
‘tranquillo’ and ‘decido’ (‘tranquil’ and ‘with conviction’).

Romanian composer George Enescu’s Légende is separated from the Haydn and Hummel trumpet concertos by a span of over a century, yet succeeds them as the next important
milestone in the trumpet repertoire. Combining the lush romantic style of Wagner with the
impressionistic style of Debussy, Légende was composed in 1906 for Paris Conservatory trumpet professor Merri Franquin, who was an active proponent of the four-valved, small-bore C
trumpet, on which he premiered the work. The instrument found its way first into European,
then North American orchestras, evolving into the modern C trumpet.

Matthew MacLean is from the class of Professor Louis Ranger

Sonata for Trumpet and Piano - Halsey Stevens

This recital is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements
for the Master of Music (Performance) program.
Reception to follow in the Lounge.

Thanks to the GI Bill of the 1950s, American colleges began to expand their music programs to accommodate a large influx of military veterans. Halsey Stevens was one American
composer who at that time came to enjoy the musical freedom that a salaried position in
academia could afford, beginning this avant-garde work in 1953 and not finishing it until
1956. Stevens made exhaustive study of the work of Bela Bartók, as the the mixed meters and
asymmetrical rhythms of this work bear witness. At the same time, the influence of the great
American composer Aaron Copland can be heard, both in the rowdy opening, reminiscent of
Copland’s Rodeo, and in the agitated fanfares of the second movement, somewhat like those
of Quiet City.
