Variations on Autumn Leaves (2023)

Luc Faris, Julian Glover, Brendan Wong

We’d like to thank all of our composition professors from our time at UVic - Dr. Anna Höstman, Dr. Anthony Tan,
Christopher Butterfield, Taylor Brook, Dr. Patrick Boyle, and Wolf Edwards.
This recital is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements
for the Bachelor of Music (Composition) program.

LUC FARIS is a composer from West Vancouver, BC. His primary instrument is piano, though he also has
experience as a percussionist and vocalist. He has studied composition at UVic under the instruction of
Dr. Anna Höstman, Dr. Anthony Tan, Christopher Butterfield, and Wolf Edwards, and has studied piano
under Eva Solar-Kinderman. In addition to music, Luc is an avid fan of visual art and creative writing. These
hobbies manifest themselves in his work through his desire to paint vivid images and tell stories in every
piece he composes. His work “Moonrise” for treble choir earned the Barbara Pentland Award for
Outstanding Composition in 2019, and his work “Nocturnes” for chamber ensemble was the recipient of
two SOCAN Young Composer Awards in 2022. He is currently a participant in the Jean Coulthard Readings
and Mentorship Program with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
JULIAN GLOVER is a composer, violist, and violinist from Victoria, BC. He explores various styles of music
ranging from popular electronic to contemporary classical. Julian has won the DigiBC music competition
in 2019, as well as first place in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival for composition in 2017 and
2018. Recently he played fiddle in the Chemainus Theatre Festival’s musical theater production Country
Roads. An avid writer for the orchestra, Julian worked as an orchestrator for the Volare Tenors for their
2022 Canadian Christmas tour. His newest orchestra work Sliding will be performed at the UVic Orchestra
concert on March 25th of this year. He is currently in the Performance and Composition programs at the
University of Victoria, having studied viola under Joanna Hood, and composition under Dr. Anthony Tan,
Dr. Anna Höstman, Christopher Butterfield, and Taylor Brook.
BRENDAN WONG is a composer, electric bassist, pianist, and trumpet player from Victoria BC. He has
formed and led jazz combos such as the HONK trio (2022-present), the Gordon//Wong Project (20192021), and The Groove Potatoes (2017-2019). These ensembles have performed at venues and events
such as The Royal BC Museum, TD Victoria JazzFest, West Coast Jazz Festival, and Hermann’s Jazz Club.
HONK regularly plays for corporate events and private functions. Brendan is co-founder and bandleader
of indie-folk band “actual human people” (2021-present). They have performed at venues such as the
Victoria Event Centre, Cameron Bandshell, Pagliacci’s Restaurant, Felicita’s Pub, as well as events such as
the Victoria Pride Festival and the TD Victoria Art Gallery Paint-In. Their debut EP bug birthday party was
released on September 17, 2022.
As a composer, Brendan’s music focuses on the synthesis of popular music and the avant-garde, often
applying elements from modern sound-design and improvisation to classical contemporary music. His
music has been performed by the UVic Wind Symphony and his composition “Putting Your Teeth in the
Microwave as if it’s Dollar Store Popcorn” will be performed by the UVic Big Band at their concert on
March 11, 2023. Brendan is currently taking his Bachelor of Music in Composition and Theory at the
University of Victoria. He is studying trumpet with Merrie Klazek, and has studied composition with Dr.
Anthony Tan and Christopher Butterfield. He is currently studying with Dr. Patrick Boyle.
