NOTES & BIOGRAPHIES
SPECTRUM BAND PROGRAM
The goal of the Spectrum Band Program is for students to develop a lasting appreciation for the value of music in their lives. Students are challenged to become
the most proficient musician and performer that they are personally capable of.
Through rehearsal and performance practices, students develop a sense of selfconfidence, self-discipline, motivation, and an inner drive for excellence in everything
that they do.
The Spectrum Senior Concert Band is comprised of grade 11 and 12 students (plus
invited grade 9 and 10 students) and has a busy local performance schedule — in
the community, at school events, at music festivals, and at local schools. A major
emphasis is placed on building traditions, teamwork, performance practices, and the
pursuit of excellence. Recent major performance engagements include appearances
at MusicFest Canada, the Klangwelten Musikfestival (Germany), Disney Magic Music
Days (California), The Hawaii Band and Orchestra Festival (Honolulu), Whirligig! Music Festival (Seattle), and The Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival (Port Alberni).
Built in 1976, Spectrum Community School is a comprehensive Secondary School
situated in the western sector of the Greater Victoria School District #61. Serving a
diverse student population of approximately 1200 students, Spectrum offers an extensive range of courses, clubs, and programs, including: AVID; a Hockey Skills Academy; honours’ classes; Musical Theatre; 19 athletic teams; and 4 Career Programs
including: Culinary Arts, Electrical Trades, Law Careers and Outdoor Leadership.
JAMIE DAVIS
Jamie Davis is currently the Director of Bands at Spectrum Community High School
in Victoria, British Columbia. He has rebuilt a small, two-band program into a multilevel program of band classes, performing concert bands, jazz bands, combos, musical
theatre pit orchestra, and a marching band. His ensembles can be heard regularly in
performance locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally. Ensembles under his direction consistently receive ratings of Superior or Gold, are in demand for concerts
and parade appearances, and receive numerous accolades for their performances.
Mr. Davis holds a Bachelor of Music degree and teaching certificate from the University of Victoria. As well, he has undertaken conducting studies with Dr. Steven J.
Capaldo and Dr. Gerald N. King. He has been awarded the 2014 Staples/Black Press
News Media “Great Teacher Award” (secondary school), a 2012 Commanding Officer’s Commendation from the Vernon Military Camp (for instruction, mentorship,
and leadership), the CFAX 1070 Golden Apple Award (for excellence in teaching)
and has been nominated for the British Columbia Premier’s Award for Teaching
Excellence (young teacher). He currently serves as the second vice-president of
the BC Music Educators Association, the provincial specialist association and music
advocacy body for the B.C. Teachers’ Federation.
He has formerly held positions as the Conductor of the Greater Victoria Intermediate Concert Band and as Director of Bands at the Vernon Military Camp (Vernon,
BC). As an undergraduate student he held multiple research assistant positions in

media arts and music education. Mr. Davis became the first Assistant Conductor for
the UVic Don Wright Symphonic Winds during their inaugural concert season of
2005-2006.
As a trombonist Mr. Davis has performed with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra,
the Thompson Valley Orchestra, and the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra. His principal
teachers include Ian Mcdougall (The Boss Brass), Hugh Fraser (Vancouver Ensemble
of Jazz Improv.), Jeremy Berkman (Vancouver Opera Orchestra), and Brad Howland
(Victoria Symphony). He has also performed and recorded with The University of
Victoria Wind Symphony and the South Island Wind Ensemble. Also active in jazz, Mr.
Davis has performed with the University of Victoria Jazz Orchestra, Hugh Fraser’s
Bonehenge and the Hermann’s Monday Night Big Band. In teaching jazz, Mr. Davis
developed and lead the Jazz In Victoria Ensemble (JIVE) — a jazz band for community adults who have never played jazz music before.
Mr. Davis is a member of the following professional organizations: British Columbia Teacher’s Federations (BCTF), British Columbia Music Educators Association
(BCMEA), British Columbia Band Association (BCBA), Canadian Music Educators
Association (CMEA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and The
National Band Association (NBA).
DR. GERALD KING
Dr. Gerald King is Professor of Music at the University of Victoria where he serves
as the conductor of the UVic Wind Symphony and is the Head of Music Education.
Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s most respected conductors, adjudicators, educators, and keynote speakers, Dr. King is the recipient of numerous awards
and honors. In 2003 he was elected into the prestigious American Bandmasters
Association, when he served as Guest Conductor of The United States Army Band
(Pershing’s Own), in Washington, DC. In 2012 he was appointed as Principal Guest
Conductor of the internationally recognized Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble in
celebration of the ensemble’s 30th anniversary. As well, he received the BC Music
Educators’ Association Honorary Life Award and was also inducted into Phi Beta Mu
(International Fraternity for Wind Band Conductors). In March 2014 he was chosen
to conduct the Ostwald/Sousa award winning composition, Pale Blue on Deep by
American composer, Aaron Perrine, with the University of South Carolina Wind
Ensemble. Also, in 2014, Dr. King was appointed as the International member of the
Western International Band Clinic University Collegiate Advisory Board. In 2015, Dr.
King was inducted as an Honorary Member of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy “for fostering tremendous goodwill towards the band, heightened morale
and esprit de corps, and providing an excellent liaison between the military and the
public.”
A former student of internationally renowned conductor, Maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Dr. King’s professional career has taken him throughout Canada, the United
States, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Japan,
Mexico, Hong Kong, Australia, and Switzerland. Dr. King’s conducting appearances
with regional, national, international honor and professional ensembles have been
praised for performance quality, artistry, and creativity. Throughout his career he
has been a champion of new music, premiering over 30 compositions. Dr. King is a
Yamaha Artist Conductor.

DAVID P. GAGNON
Born in Quebec, David studied saxophone and recording at the College de Sherbrooke before graduating from McGill University in Music with Honors in Music
Technology. He joined the Canadian Forces Reserve in Sherbrooke in 2003 where
he played and eventually conducted until 2012 when he was accepted as a Regular
Force member with the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy and moved to Victoria. Since then apart from playing saxophone in the ensemble and as a soloist, you
can see him as the Drum Major in front of the Band on parade or in the recording
studio when needed.
In Quebec, David performed with his saxophone quartet and a variety of big bands
and concert bands. He taught saxophone, flute and clarinet and conducted elementary to high school level bands. He also toured Quebec with the well known singer
Dan Bigras conducting his big band and performing at the Montreal Jazz Festival.
Mr. Gagnon is currently working on a Master of Music Degree in Conducting under
the supervision of Dr. Gerald King.
MARCELLA BARZ
Marcella Barz is currently completing her Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in
Clarinet Performance, at the University of Victoria where she studies with Patricia
Kostek and Keith MacLeod. Originally from Kamloops, she studied clarinet with Sally
Arai and graduated from South Kamloops Secondary School. In 2012, she won a
concerto competition and appeared onstage as soloist with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, performing Debussy’s Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Orchestra. She has
performed with the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, the Thompson
Valley Orchestra, the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, the National Youth Band of
Canada, and the North American High School Band Honors Performance Series
at Carnegie Hall. After attaining her degree, Marcella is looking forward to pursuing
further music studies at the graduate level.
ERIN ONYSCHTSCHUK
Island-born Erin Onyschtschuk is a Performance Major in her final year of studies
at the University of Victoria. Jumping at every musical opportunity available, she is
currently the principal clarinetist of the UVic Symphony Orchestra and the Greater
Victoria Youth Orchestra. Although her love of symphonic repertoire is strong, her
greatest love is taming the most lethal weapon of the clarinet arsenal, the E-flat clarinet. Erin has been fortunate enough to have been the acting E-flat player in UVic’s
Wind Symphony for three years. Her most memorable moments at UVic have often
included being a part of this Wind Symphony. Being able to share the stage with
Marcella and this wonderful group of people is truly inspiring. After graduation, Erin
will continue to gain as much knowledge and training as possible in order to be able
to give her clarinet(s) the love they deserve. She also hopes to bring forward a new
emphasis on woodwind chamber music in Victoria and show the beauty of the ideal
clarinet quartet involving E-flat and bass clarinet.

BIOGRAPHIES
Aliayta Foon-Dancoes
Aliayta Foon-Dancoes’s violin studies began when she was four with
Alison Sloan, continued with Dr. Walter Mony and Andrew Dawes and
is now in her third year studying with Ann Elliott-Goldschmid at the
University of Victoria. She is a two-time winner of the Vancouver Youth
Symphony’s Concerto Competition; won the 2011 Shields Scholarship
in the Vancouver Academy of Music’s Senior Secondary Competition
and has been awarded scholarships to attend the Orford, Tafelmusik,
Astona Music Academies and Morningside Music Bridge. A keen
chamber musician, Aliayta was a member of Robert Rozek’s Stradivari
Ensemble and played with a quartet that won first prize in the 2010
Friends of Chamber Music Senior Competition. She has played with
professional ensembles including the Victoria Symphony, the Sydney
Concert Orchestra and the Galliano Ensemble. Aliayta won first prize
in UVic’s 2014 Bach Competition.
Evan Hesketh
Evan Hesketh began studying violin at age seven with Yasuko Eastman, who also introduced him to the viola a few years later. He holds
a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria, where he
studied violin with Ann Elliott-Goldschmid and viola with Joanna Hood
and Yariv Aloni. Further studies led to a Master of Music degree at
the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of Robert Vernon,
Jeffrey Irvine, and Kirsten Docter. Evan has played in masterclasses
for Pinchas Zukerman, James Dunham, Roger Tapping, Atar Arad, and
Steven Dann.
An award-winning chamber musician, Evan was a member of the Ariadne String Quartet, prizewinners at the 2012 Fischoff Competition,
and the 2012 Coleman Competition. Quartet studies have been with
members of the Lafayette, Cleveland, Cavani, Miro, Juilliard, Brentano,
and Schoenberg quartets.
Currently, Evan studies conducting at the University of Victoria on a
full scholarship with Ajtony Csaba. He has conducted the UVic
Orchestra, Victoria Civic Orchestra, and festival orchestras in Maine
and New Hampshire.

Ajtony Csaba
Ajtony Csaba, born in Cluj, Romania, began his studies on the cello
and later piano and composition in Budapest at the Academy of Music.
He began studying conducting in Vienna and Budapest with Uroš Lajovic, Peter Eötvös, Zoltán Pesko, Zsolt Nagy, Lucas Vis and Antoni Wit.
He was awarded many prizes as a conductor and composer, and was
a semi-finalist in the first competition for opera in Cluj, Romania.
Csaba has had numerous concerts in Hungary and Austria with
orchestras including UMZE, Sinfonietta Baden, Webern Sinfonietta,
Savaria Symphony Orchestra, and Danubia Orchestra. In the 2003/04
season he was the assistant conductor and tutor of the Academy
Orchestra Budapest and in 2005 was invited to be the assistant conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra with their
contemporary program. He made his conducting debut in the Viennese Musikverein with the RSO (Radio-Symphonieorchester, Wien) in
2007.
Since 2006 Csaba has served as the chief conductor of the Central
European Chamber Orchestra, and led the orchestra on a tour in
China (performances including halls in Shenzhen, Lanzhou and in the
Parliament in Beijing), with return engagements in 2007 and 2009.
Ajtony Csaba has been the leader of the Vienna Jeunesse Choir since
2007. In 2008 he conducted at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for
New Music and was assistant at the Salzburg Festspiele. In 2008 he
conducted the EuroMed Youth Orchestra in Damaskus, Syria.
In the past season Csaba conducted the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Tsilumos at the Montreal New Music Festival and
the Brazilian SiMN Festival in Curitiba. Upcoming concerts include
subscription concerts with the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra and
Danubia Orchestra.
Csaba has served as music director of the University of Victoria Orchestra and Sonic Lab since 2010, where he also teaches conducting
and the history of conducting.

LAFAYETTE STRING QUARTET
In July 1986, four young musicians, based in Detroit and just beginning their
professional careers, performed together for the first time as the Lafayette
String Quartet. Today the LSQ continues to flourish with its original personnel: violinists Ann Elliott-Goldschmid and Sharon Stanis, violist Joanna Hood,
and cellist Pamela Highbaugh Aloni.
For five years, the LSQ prospered in Detroit, where its members taught at
the Center for Creative Studies/Institute of Music and Dance and Oakland
University. The LSQ itself received coaching from some of the world’s most
esteemed quartets—the Amadeus and the Alban Berg, and Cleveland—and
from the violinist Rostislav Dubinsky, of the legendary Borodin Quartet, who
served as the women’s “musical mentor” until his death in 1997.
The LSQ’s extraordinary musicianship was recognized early on. Already in
1988, it was ranked among the magazine Musical America’s “Young Artists
to Watch,” and in its first years they won the Grand prize at the Fischoff
National Chamber Music Competition and prizes at the Portsmouth (now
City of London) International String Quartet Competition, and the Chicago
Discovery Competition. As winners of the 1988 Cleveland String Quartet
Competition, the LSQ had the opportunity to study for two years with the
Cleveland Quartet at the Eastman School of Music, in Rochester, New York.
Artists-in-Residence at the University of Victoria’s School of Music since
1991, their dedication and skill have played a major role in building
one of
the finest music schools in Canada. In addition to quartet performances and
collaborating with colleagues in the School of Music, members of the quartet
teach individual lessons, coach chamber music groups, and give studio masterclasses on a weekly basis. They have been principal players of the Galiano
Ensemble of Victoria since its inception and continue to serve the community promoting strings in the public schools through outreach programs and
the strings mentoring course at UVic. In June, they offer Quartet Fest West,
an intensive quartet seminar that brings together young musicians from all
over the world. Their annual Health Awareness Forum, founded in 2006
offers timely insights from top health experts on a wide range of topics.
They recieved honorary doctorates from University Canada West and were
honored with the inaugural Craigdarroch Award for Excellence in Artistic
Expression in 2010 from the University of Victoria.

The LSQ has performed across Canada, the United States, Mexico and
Europe, with concerts often allied with masterclasses and workshops; they
had a close and lasting relationship with the University of Saskatchewan,
in Saskatoon while playing on the set of Amatis owned by the institution.
They have collaborated with distinguished colleagues including bassist Gary
Karr; clarinetist James Campbell; flutist Eugenia Zukerman; violinists Andrew
Dawes and Gary Levinson; violists James Dunham, Atar Arad, and Yariv Aloni;
cellists Paul Katz, and the late Tanya Prochazka; and pianists Luba Edlina Dubinsky, Jane Coop, Robert Silverman, Ronald Turini, Alexander Tselyakov, Baya
Kakouberi and Flavio Varani. They often collaborate with other string quartets
including the Alcan, the New Zealand, the Penderecki, the Molinari, the Emily
Carr, and the Quarteto Latinoamericano.
The four women also maintain separate careers as solo and chamber music
performers, teachers, and adjudicators.
The LSQ carries a large, wide-ranging repertoire, from the classical period
to the present, and has commissioned music from (and in some cases collaborated closely with) composers including Murray Adaskin, John Burke,
Justin Haynes, David Jaffe, R. Murray Schafer, Eugene Weigel, and Kelly Marie
Murphy. They have performed the complete Beethoven cycle, during the
2000-2001 season, the quartets of the Second Viennese school with the
Molinari Quartet in 2013, and in celebration of their thirty years together,
will perform the string quartets of Dmitri Shostakovich.
Since 1990, the LSQ has released CDs on the Dorian, Centrediscs, and other
labels (including its own). Its discography includes major quartets by Borodin,
Debussy, Grieg, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky; Dvořák’s piano quintets (with
Antonin Kubalek); and four CDs of music by Adaskin, for his AdLar label. Its
2002 CBC Records disc Death and the Maiden, featuring music by Schubert,
Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, and Rebecca Clarke, won the Western Canadian
Music Award for Outstanding Classical Recording. It recorded Michael Longton’s Almost Nothing Like Purple Haze for the 2011 CD Jimi Hendrix Uncovered, and has recently released a CD together with Alexander Tselyakov of
the quintets of Dmitri Shostakovich and the newly commissioned quintet
Motion and Distance, by Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy.
The LSQ is the subject of David Rounds’ book The Four and the One: In Praise
of String Quartets, published in 1999.
