Fifty years from now
Music: J. Sit
Lyrics: J. Sit
Walkin’ ‘long the piers and looking, I
(I) saw the ferry twenty-three going by,
The raindrops were building streams with my tears,
Thinking, “Soon, my darling, you will be here.”
But then you went away, on the first of July,
You said you were afraid our freedoms might die,
You got on the plane with your mother and your bags,
I had no voice, no choice, alone and sad.
CHORUS
Well, time has marched on and so have I,
The orchid trees grow to touch the sky,
When the winds, they got rough, it didn’t take long,
I made news friends, hundred thousand (strong) –
I don’t need you back here anymore,
‘Cause things ain’t the same like they were before,
You weren’t there, in the rain, on Hennessy Road,
I know who I am, and you’ll never know.
----Walkin’ pass the shops on Nathan, I
(I) see news signs I don’t recognize,
The radios are singing different tunes,
Washing over me like the coming monsoons.
Fifty years from now, can it still be the same?
Will it be enough to protect us, if only in name?
Our fathers keep on lying, obscuring the truth,
One country, two systems, oh, where is the proof?
Obscuring the truth…we’ll show you our proof…

TEXT AND TRANSLATIONS
An Mignon – To Mignon
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)
Über Tal und Fluß getragen,
Ziehet rein der Sonne Wagen.
Ach, sie regt in ihrem Lauf,
So wie deine, meine Schmerzen,
Tief im Herzen,
Immer morgens wieder auf.

Crossing over vale and river
the sun chariot passes cleanly.
Ah, it stirs in its course
my agonies, much like yours,
deep in the heart,
always fresh each morning.

Kaum will mir die Nacht noch frommen,
Denn die Träume selber kommen
Nun in trauriger Gestalt,
Und ich fühle dieser Schmerzen,
Still im Herzen
Heimlich bildende Gewalt.

Hardly does the night help me,
for my dreams themselves come
now in mournful aspect,
and I feel these pains
quietly in my heart,
a secretly-forming power.

Schon seit manchen schönen Jahren
Seh ich unten Schiffe fahren,
Jedes kommt an seinen Ort;
Aber ach, die steten Schmerzen,
Fest im Herzen,
Schwimmen nicht im Strome fort.

I must appear in fine clothing
taken from the wardrobe
because today is a holiday;
no one suspects the agony
that in my heart of hearts
is tearing grimly at me.

Schön in Kleidern muß ich kommen,
Aus dem Schrank sind sie genommen,
Weil es heute Festtag ist;
Niemand ahnet, daß von Schmerzen
Herz im Herzen
Grimmig mir zerrissen ist.

Already, for many fair years
have I seen ships sailing below,
each going to its place,
but ah! the constant agonies,
firm in my heart,
do not float away in the river.

Heimlich muß ich immer weinen,
Aber freundlich kann ich scheinen
Und sogar gesund und rot;
Wären tödlich diese Schmerzen
Meinem Herzen,
Ach, schon lange wär ich tot.

In secret I must weep,
but I can seem cheerful,
even healthy and flushed;
were these agonies fatal
to my heart,
ah, I would long since have died.

Lied aus Aslauga's Ritter - Song of Aslauga's Knight
(De la Motte Fouqué)
Ach, wär' ich nur ein Vögelein!
das darf die Flur durchklingen fein,
gar mannigfalt
mit allem, mit allem,
was in ihm schallt!
Ach, möcht' ich blühn als Blume rein!
die darf das Grün durchhauchen fein,
so fromm und mild
mit allem, mit allem,
was in ihr quillt!
So bin ich nur ein Rittersmann
auf hoher Spur in Acht und Bann
und nehm' hinab
mein alles, mein alles
verstummt ins Grab.

Oh, if I were only a little bird!
this may sound fine through the hallway,
even magnificent
with all, with all that
which resounds in it!
Oh, I should like to bloom as a flower!
which may breathe through the green,
so pious and mild
with all, with all that
which swells in it!
I'm just a knight
on high track outlawed
and'll take down
my everything, my everything
silent in the grave.

Der Erste Kuss – The First Kiss
(Moritz Kartscher)
Die Lippe brennt, die Wange glüht,
Verlangen sprüht das düstere Auge in Thränen;
wer kühlt die Gluth, wer stillt das Blut,
wo endet das endlose Sehnen?

The lip is burning, the cheek glows,
The longing says my eyes are sprayed with tears;
Who cools the glowing, who calms the blood,
where does the endless longing end?

Das Wort erstirbt, die Seele bebt,
verzagend hebt das Herz sich in hoffender Liebe,
wer hemmt die Fluth, wer stärkt den Muth,
wer hellet die nächtliche Trübe?

The word dies, the soul trembles,
despondently the heart rises in hopeful love,
Who inhibits the tide, who strengthens courage,
who betters the nightly troubles?

Das Leben blüht, es ruft die Lust!
an Liebchens Brust wohnt selige Ruhe hinieden;
der Liebe Gruß, der erste Kuß
bringt kosend den himmlischen Frieden.

Life blooms, it calls the pleasure!
to my sweetheart's chest lives here, below, blissful
peace;
of Love, the first kiss
brings, caressing, the heavenly peace.

Three Solitudes for Piano and Viola (2009)
I. Power Breeds Madness
II. 2006*
III.the dream-encrusted window
*Dedicated to Marie

Elizabeth Clarke, piano

Simon Mackie

The Solitudes are a series of pieces about emotions, thoughts or feelings
that can only be felt and experienced alone, inside oneself.
farawaydistance is a kind of daydream-fantasie. Power Breeds
Madness chronicles the slow descent into madness and how it spirals out of
control. 2006 asks the question: what are the consequences of changing
your life? the dream-encrusted window is all about what happens to ideas
when you release them--listen to the before, the after and the in-between.
Kyrie begins in an ethereal way, as if we woke up for a dream in a
different and tranquil place. This atmosphere has, as a main goal, not to
leave any clues about how the timbre of the main text (Kyrie Eleison) will
sound like, once this text is part of an electroacoustic piece. The Kyrie has
a character of constant oscillation. This oscillation varies between
sensations of gentleness and piece to aggressiveness and fear, passing
directly from one to the other. This image is closely connected to the
registers used in the piece (either very low or very high) and symbolizes a
constant passage between the heaven and the hell, where the man begs
for mercy to Christ.
Three Poems by John Clare - John Clare (1793-1864) obtained only
enough schooling to enable him to read and write, but in 1820 his works
attracted the leading writers of the day. However, his celebrity soon
dimmed and financial failures and other disappointments led to his mind
giving way. He lived in an asylum for almost the rest of his life, where he
was well taken care of and encouraged to keep writing. His poetry is
delicate and beautiful, a small window into the inner feelings of a peasant
in love with nature and with God. (Paraphrased from the Norton Anthology
of English Literature).
Elizabeth Gerow is in her second year of Composition Studies with John
Celona at the University of Victoria, and is also studying voice with Susan
Young.
