An account of the resource
UVic's Wind Symphony is recognized as one of the premiere performing wind ensembles in the Pacific Northwest. The ensemble is in constant demand to perform at festivals and conferences. Recently, the Wind Symphony represented Canada at the Annual WesternInternational Band Conference in Seattle in November, 2002. As well, the Wind Symphony has been a featured guest ensemble at the B.C. Music Educators' Conference. The Wind Symphony provides opportunities for all wind and percussion players in the School. Its repertoire includes transcriptions of orchestral works, concerti, chamber ensembles, large symphonic band works and new music for the concert band. The Wind Symphony regularly features student, faculty and guest solo artists, and has given numerous Canadian and world premieres of contemporary works.

�P r o g ra m N ot e s
“Music has always been used as a way of expressing emotions or as
an antidote to certain painful life encounters,” writes composer, Richard L. Saucedo. Tonight, we perform music of war and remembrance
in what we hope will be a poignant and reflective concert, a journey
through a variety of emotions as wide ranging as the music itself.
Bulla’s Firestorm, commissioned by a military band after the first Gulf
War, attempts to convey the colors, tension, and events of the war, including airborne bombing raids set against the lively hustle and bustle
of a Baghdad marketplace and the unspoiled beauty of the Iraqi countryside before the siege. Saucedo composed With Each Sunset (Comes
the Promise of a New Day) in memory of an American construction
worker in Iraq who was kidnapped and executed by terrorists in 2004.
In Hymn to the Fallen, John Williams created a powerful and emotional
melody for the end of the film Saving Private Ryan, evoking feelings of
hope and strength amid an overall tone of reverence. We are delighted to welcome the Mount Douglas Secondary School Concert Choir
under the direction of UVic alumnus Mr. Doug Awai to perform with
us tonight.
Elliot del Borgo attempted to recreate the essence of the Dylan
Thomas poem Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night in sound. Influenced by American composer Charles Ives, del Borgo used sound
layers – in the form of polytonal hymns – calling to mind the struggles
and persistence of the human spirit. Symphony No. 1 (In Memoriam
Dresden, 1945) was composed by Daniel Bukvich to depict the fierce
Allied bombing attacks on Dresden, Germany, on February 13–14,
1945. It will be immediately followed by Nimrod, one of the movements from Sir Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, which since its composition in 1899 has taken on an elegiac character and played at funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions in Great Britain
and around the world. It is a fitting close to tonight’s concert.

The Naden Band, under the direction of Lieutenant (Navy) Matthew
Clark joins the Wind Symphony in a fundraising concert to support
the Naden Band Scholarship in Music Performance for School of
Music wind students. Featured works include Symphony No. 8 by David
Maslanka and Eric Ewazen Concerto for Bassoon with UVic alumna
Petty Officer Second Class Robyn Jutras.

Professor Eugene Dowling
Conductor, University of Victoria Wind Symphony
Eugene Dowling has been a faculty member of the School of Music, University of Victoria for nearly forty years and was Principal Tubist with the
Victoria Symphony for twenty-five years. Since leaving the symphony he has
maintained an active schedule as a conductor, soloist, clinician and chamber musician. His recording The English Tuba on the Fanfare/Pro Arte label
was nominated for a Juno Award and received a number of favourable
reviews and worldwide radio play. Under Dowling’s direction, the Victoria
Tuba Christmas Ensemble has raised thousands of dollars for local charities
and has been featured in such diverse venues as CBC TV’s The Journal and
with the Victoria Symphony Christmas Pops program. Eugene Dowling is a
Yamaha Artist.
Lieutenant (N) Matthew Clark, CD
Commanding Officer / Director of Music
Since assuming command of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in
October 2011, Lieutenant navy Matthew Clark’s artistic vision, coupled with
his passion for symphonic wind music and deep regard for military music
tradition, has inspired a number of recording projects and innovative collaborations with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir, the University of Victoria’s
music and theatre departments, and the Victoria Symphony. Lt (N) Clark
and the Naden Band recently commissioned and performed a new work
from Ian MacDougall and will continue to encourage new Canadian music in
the future.
A graduate of the University of Toronto, Lt(N) Clark studied conducting
and wind ensemble repertoire extensively with Dr. Gillian MacKay. He has
also worked with notable wind ensemble specialists Eugene Corporon, Jack
Stamp, and Craig Kirchhoff.
An equally gifted euphonium soloist, Lt(N) Clark’s 2007 solo recording for
the Arktos Label, entitled EUPHONIUM, has been featured on CBC Radio
and in the British Bandsman, the longest-running international publication of
brass bands.
�PO2 Robyn Jutras
Bassoon Soloist
PO2 Robyn Jutras joined the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in
the spring of 2010, and was happy to be posted home to the west coast.
Originally from Vancouver, Robyn studied at the University of Victoria where
she completed her Bachelor of Music in 2004 before moving to New York
to earn a Master of Music from the Juilliard School in 2007. Other musical
highlights included a tour of southern Germany with Festivalensemble Stuttgart, a woodwind quintet tour in Korea, performance of a double quintet
with the New York Wind Quintet and summer sessions at Domaine Forget
in Quebec as well as at the Banff Centre. Currently PO2 Jutras plays in
several ensembles within the Naden Band, including the concert band, stage
band, sax quartet, and woodwind quintet, which is preparing for an upcoming concert at UBC. She also composes and arranges music for the band,
and occasionally plays contrabassoon with the Victoria Symphony. When
she’s not busy bassooning, you might find her out hiking up or biking down a
mountain, playing floor hockey, or enjoying one of Victoria’s many excellent
restaurants.

Recently, the Wind Symphony represented Canada at the Annual WesternInternational Band Conference in Seattle in November, 2002. As well, the Wind Symphony has been a featured guest ensemble at the B.C. Music Educators' Conference. The Wind Symphony provides opportunities for all wind and percussion players in the School. Its repertoire includes transcriptions of orchestral works, concerti, chamber ensembles, large symphonic band works and new music for the concert band. The Wind Symphony regularly features student, faculty and guest solo artists, and has given numerous Canadian and world premieres of contemporary works.

�BIOGRAPHIES
Dr. Gerald King
Dr. Gerald King is Professor of Music at the University of Victoria where he serves as
the conductor of the UVic Wind Symphony and heads the graduate Wind Conducting program. Recognized as one of Canada’s most respected conductors, adjudicators, and educators, Dr. King is the recipient of numerous awards—most recently,
in the fall of 2012 he received the British Columbia Music Educators’ Association
Honorary Life Award and was also inducted into Phi Beta Mu (International Fraternity for Wind Band Conductors). Although he is primarily recognized as a conductor of
Wind Bands, he is equally comfortable conducting Orchestras and Choirs. A former
student of internationally renowned conductor, Maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Dr.
King’s professional career has taken him throughout Canada, the United States,
Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Japan,
Mexico, Hong Kong, and Australia. Dr. King’s conducting appearances with regional,
national, international honor and professional ensembles have been praised for
performance quality, artistry, and creativity.
Paul Vickers, B Mus Studies, Grad Dip Ed.
Paul Vickers is currently the Graduate Assistant Conductor of the University of
Victoria Wind Symphony where he is completing his Masters of Music in conducting
with Dr. Gerald King. Prior to his placement in Victoria, Paul conducted wind and
jazz ensembles in Sydney, Australia guiding several ensembles to award winning
performances at festivals across the country. Paul was also the Assistant Conductor
for an Australian honours-band performing at the prestigious Midwest Band and
Orchestra Directors Conference in Chicago, 2007.
As a trombonist, Paul was a performance major at the Sydney Conservatorium of
Music, where he studied with the Principal Trombonist of the Australian Opera
Ballet Orchestra, and Associate Principal Trombonist of the Sydney Symphony
Orchestra. He has also earned a Graduate Diploma in Music Education from the
University of New England, Australia. Paul has conducted on training programs
with professional orchestras in Australia and New Zealand, and in 2010 he travelled
to the University of Texas at Austin as the recipient of a scholarship from the World
Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.
�Kory Major
Kory Major is from Terrace, BC and grew up with a love of
music. He began his Undergraduate studies at The University
of Victoria with Eugene Dowling. While in Victoria, Kory was a
member of the UVic Wind Symphony as well as the Orchestra.
He also served as Principal Tubist with the Greater Victoria
Youth Orchestra and performed with The Victoria Civic
Orchestra.
He is currently attending The New England Conservatory
where he studies with Mike Roylance, Principal Tubist of the
Boston Symphony Orchestra. Before moving to Boston, Kory completed his Artist
Diploma at the Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto
where he was a student of National Ballet Tubist Sasha Johnson.
Steven Price
Baritone, Steven Price has earned a place for himself on the stages and in the
concert halls of Canada, the United States and Europe. With his versatility, rich tone
and commanding stage presence he has received praise from audiences and critics
alike. His operatic repertoire ranges from the works of Mozart and Rossini to those
of Puccini and Bizet. On the oratorio platform, he is called upon to perform works
by composers such as Handel, Orff and Mendelssohn. Steven’s encouraging manner
with soloists and choristers of all ages is highly regarded and he is highly sought
after as a vocal and choral adjudicator and clinician.
Steven lives with his wife and his four children in Victoria. He teaches Musical
Theatre and Drama at Oak Bay High School.

Symphonic Dance No. 3 (Fiesta) is one of five Symphonic Dances commissioned by the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 1964. The composer wanted to reflect the excitement and color
of the city’s many Mexican celebrations in what he called “the pageantry of
Latin American celebration – street bands, bull fights, bright costumes, the
colorful legacy of a proud people.”
For decades Carlos Chávez (1899–1978) embodied Mexican music and represented it as a composer, conductor and an all-around cultural missionary.
But in today’s musical landscape, Chávez’s modernist pedigree – esteemed
by Aaron Copland and others in the United States – matters less and
Chávez’s mercurial contemporary Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940) seems at
least as dominant a figure in Mexican cultural history.
In his Sinfonía India, Carlos Chávez looked to indigenous melodies to create an authentically Mexican work. The symphony is based on three native
melodies (hence the title), which supply the ideas for what are in effect three
movements, though they are performed without pause. The melodies are
from the Huicholes of Nayarit, the Yaquis of Sonora, and the Seris of Tiburón
Island in Baja California, supplemented by secondary themes, some of which
are also quoted from folklore.
The Wind Symphony is proud to present the Canadian premiere of the
chamber version of Sensemayá by Silvestre Revueltas. The rhythms are laid
out precisely and have considerable visceral impact, very much in a manner
that recalls Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Reueltas based the work on
a poem by the Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén. Guillén’s poem evokes a magical snake sacrifice by the Cuban Mayombe sect who are of central African
Bantu origin. The chamber version that we will perform tonight was written
in 1937 for chamber ensemble; one year later, the composer transcribed and
expanded it for full orchestra.
La Fiesta Mexicana was written by H. Owen Reed in 1949, based on experiences gained during a five-month stay in Mexico on a Guggenheim Fellowship. Carnival is given over to unceasing entertainment and celebration. At
the beginning, the listener hears the itinerant circus, then the market, the
bullfight, the town band, and finally the cantinas with their band of mariachis.
The authentic folk tunes Reed used can be found in Chapala, Jalisco, and
Guadalajara.
�We will conclude this program of Mexican music and music inspired by
Mexico with the Danzón No. 2 of Arturo Márquez. Although Márquez was
already an accomplished composer in Mexico, his music started to reach
the international stage with the introduction of his series of Danzones in the
early 1990s. They are inspired on a dance style called Danzón, which has its
origins in Cuba but is a very important part of the folklore of the Mexican
state of Veracruz. Márquez got his inspiration while visiting a ballroom in
Veracruz. Danzón No. 2 was included on the program of the Simon Bolívar
Youth Orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel on their 2007 tour of
Europe and the United States. As a result of the strong public response to
the orchestra’s performance of the piece, it has appeared in many orchestral programs all over the world and sparked an interest in other works by
Márquez.

B I O G R A P HY
Eugene Dowling has been a faculty member of the School of Music, University of Victoria for nearly forty years and was Principal tubist with the
Victoria Symphony for twenty-five years. Since leaving the symphony he has
maintained an active schedule as a conductor, soloist, clinician and chamber musician. His recording The English Tuba on the Fanfare/Pro Arte label
was nominated for a Juno Award and received a number of favourable
reviews and worldwide radio play. Under Dowling’s direction, the Victoria
Tuba Christmas ensemble has raised thousands of dollars for local charities
and has been featured in such diverse venues as CBC TV’s The Journal and
with the Victoria Symphony Christmas Pops program. Eugene Dowling is a
Yamaha Artist.

An account of the resource
UVic's Wind Symphony is recognized as one of the premiere performing wind ensembles in the Pacific Northwest. The ensemble is in constant demand to perform at festivals and conferences. Recently, the Wind Symphony represented Canada at the Annual WesternInternational Band Conference in Seattle in November, 2002. As well, the Wind Symphony has been a featured guest ensemble at the B.C. Music Educators' Conference. The Wind Symphony provides opportunities for all wind and percussion players in the School. Its repertoire includes transcriptions of orchestral works, concerti, chamber ensembles, large symphonic band works and new music for the concert band. The Wind Symphony regularly features student, faculty and guest solo artists, and has given numerous Canadian and world premieres of contemporary works.

Dr. Gerald King
Conductor, University of Victoria Wind Symphony
Dr. Gerald King is Professor of Music at the University of Victoria where he
serves as the conductor of the UVic Wind Symphony and is the Head of
Music Education. Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s most respected conductors, adjudicators, educators, and keynote speakers, Dr. King
is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. In 2003 he was elected into
the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, when he served as Guest
Conductor of The United States Army Band (Pershing’s Own), in Washington, DC. In 2012 he was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of the
internationally recognized Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble in celebration
of the ensemble’s 30th anniversary. As well, he received the BC Music Educators’ Association Honorary Life Award and was also inducted into Phi Beta
Mu (International Fraternity for Wind Band Conductors). In March 2014 he
was chosen to conduct the Ostwald/Sousa award winning composition, Pale
Blue on Deep by American composer, Aaron Perrine, with the University of
South Carolina Wind Ensemble. Also, in 2014, Dr. King was appointed as the
International member of the Western International Band Clinic University
Collegiate Advisory Board.
A former student of internationally renowned conductor, Maestro Kazuyoshi
Akiyama, Dr. King’s professional career has taken him throughout Canada,
the United States, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Italy,
France, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Hong Kong, Australia, and Switzerland. Dr. King’s
conducting appearances with regional, national, international honor and
professional ensembles have been praised for performance quality, artistry,
and creativity. Throughout his career he has been a champion of new music,
premiering over 30 compositions. Dr. King is a Yamaha Artist Conductor.
�Lieutenant (N) Matthew Clark, CD
Commanding Officer / Director of Music
Since assuming command of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in
October 2011, Lieutenant navy Matthew Clark’s artistic vision, coupled with
his passion for symphonic wind music and deep regard for military music
tradition, has inspired a number of recording projects and innovative collaborations with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir, the University of Victoria’s
music and theatre departments, and the Victoria Symphony. Lt (N) Clark
and the Naden Band recently commissioned and performed a new work
from Ian MacDougall and will continue to encourage new Canadian music in
the future.
A graduate of the University of Toronto, Lt(N) Clark studied conducting
and wind ensemble repertoire extensively with Dr. Gillian MacKay. He has
also worked with notable wind ensemble specialists Eugene Corporon, Jack
Stamp, and Craig Kirchhoff.
An equally gifted euphonium soloist, Lt(N) Clark’s 2007 solo recording for
the Arktos Label, entitled EUPHONIUM, has been featured on CBC Radio
and in the British Bandsman, the longest-running international publication of
brass bands.

It is a Bright and Sunny day as the sequined curtain rises on tinsel town, and the excitement of a new
day filled with the possibility of The Big Payoff is practically palpable. The band kicks off the show in
high gear and all is well as we suddenly hear:
��BIOGRAPHIES
BECKY MAJOR (TRUMPET)
Becky is a familiar face in community groups around Victoria. Earning her Bachelor
of Music from the University of Victoria in 2012, Becky has been involved in various
local groups as well as ensembles around Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Last
year, Becky spent 8 months traveling around Germany where she had the opportunity to take lessons with various teachers while improving her German language
skills. Becky performs most often with the 5th Field Regimental band as a reserve
musician, a role she has held since 2009. In addition to music, Becky enjoys spending
time with her husband, also a member of Brasstastic.
ALANA JOHNSON (TRUMPET)
Alana has been a musician since she can remember. Piano was her first love at the
age of five and she began to sing even before that time. The trumpet found her
twelve years ago in her elementary school’s beginning band. After being involved in
outstanding middle and high school music programs, she completed a Bachelor of
Music in Trumpet performance at the University of Victoria under the direction of
Louis Ranger. She currently shares her love of music with elementary, middle and
high school students around Sooke and Victoria. She seeks to provide young musicians with the same fun, skills and opportunities she was blessed with during her
education.
NORBERT ZIEGLER (FRENCH HORN)
Norbert has been playing the horn for 17 years. He earned his Bachelor of Music
and Master of Music degree from the University of Victoria under Kurt Kellan, former Principal Horn of the Calgary Philharmonic. Norbert has performed with many
ensembles including: University of Victoria Wind Symphony, University of Victoria
Orchestra, Ensemble Pacifica, South Island Wind Ensemble, Beacon Hill Brass, Victoria
Operatic Society and of course Brasstastic. Currently Norbert is the music teacher
at Stelly’s Secondary School in Central Saanich.
LIAM CAVENEY (TROMBONE)
Liam is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance at the
University of Victoria (UVic) under the guidance of Scott MacInnes. Liam has also
studied with Ian McDougall and Thomas Eadie. Liam currently holds the positions of
principal trombone in the UVic Orchestra and the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra and is an alumni of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. He has attended
Domaine Forget and the Pacific Region Academy of Music and performs in several
chamber ensembles around Victoria, including Brasstastic. Liam has performed as a
soloist with the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra and the UVic Wind Symphony and
as a winner of the UVic Concerto Competition performed the Grøndahl Trombone
Concerto with the UVic Orchestra in November 2013.
KORY MAJOR (TUBA)
Kory completed his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria in
2010. Afterwards, he went on to complete an Artist Diploma at the prestigious
Glenn Gould School of Music where he studied with Sasha Johnson, Principal Tuba
with the National Ballet of Canada. Kory has performed with The True North Brass
Quintet, The Hannaford St. Silver Band and The New England Conservatory Philharmonia Orchestra upon his acceptance to the Conservatory in 2012.
�BRASSTASTIC
Brasstastic is an energetic quintet eager to share their love of music with audiences
of all ages across Victoria. Made up of graduates and students from the University of
Victoria, its members strive to use their musical knowledge as a tool to engage the
public with sounds from all genres. Brasstastic takes a special interest in education for
youth by performing school concerts on a regular basis. They hope to reach young
students in a fun and engaging way while informing them about the path to learning
music. In addition to education, Brasstastic is also focused on community involvements.
DAVID P. GAGNON
Born in Quebec, David studied saxophone and recording at the College de Sherbrooke before graduating from McGill University in Music with Honors in Music
Technology. He joined the Canadian Forces Reserve in Sherbrooke in 2003 where
he played and eventually conducted until 2012 when he was accepted as a Regular
Force member with the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy and moved to Victoria. Since then apart from playing saxophone in the ensemble and as a soloist, you
can see him as the Drum Major in front of the Band on parade or in the recording
studio when needed.
In Quebec, David performed with his saxophone quartet and a variety of big bands
and concert bands. He taught saxophone, flute and clarinet and conducted elementary to high school level bands. He also toured Quebec with the well known singer
Dan Bigras conducting his big band and performing at the Montreal Jazz Festival.
Mr. Gagnon is currently working on a Master of Music Degree in Conducting under
the supervision of Dr. Gerald King.
DR. GERALD KING
Dr. King is Professor of Music at the University of Victoria where he serves as the
conductor of the UVic Wind Symphony and heads the Music Education Division.
From 2004–2012 he served as Director of the School of Music. Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s most respected conductors, adjudicators, educators
and keynote speakers, Dr. King is the recipient of many prestigious honors and
awards. Dr. King is a former student of internationally renowned conductor, Maestro
Kazuyoshi Akiyama with whom he studied the Saito Conducting Technique. His professional career has taken him throughout Canada, the United States, Great Britain,
Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Hong Kong,
Australia, and Switzerland. Dr. King’s conducting appearances with Regional, National,
International Honor, and Professional Ensembles have been praised for performance
quality, artistry, and creativity.
Dr. King is also widely recognized as an expert for his ability to link theory and practice in the field of teaching and learning. Among his many recordings and publications
is a chapter in the book, Creativity and Music Education, written by seventeen authors
from the United States, Canada, Israel, Australia, Great Britain, Spain, and Scotland.
The book includes a forward by noted author on creativity, Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi.
In addition, Dr. King has completed a well-received DVD—The Craft of Conducting.
Dr. King is a Yamaha Artist Educator/Conductor.

An account of the resource
UVic's Wind Symphony is recognized as one of the premiere performing wind ensembles in the Pacific Northwest. The ensemble is in constant demand to perform at festivals and conferences. Recently, the Wind Symphony represented Canada at the Annual WesternInternational Band Conference in Seattle in November, 2002. As well, the Wind Symphony has been a featured guest ensemble at the B.C. Music Educators' Conference. The Wind Symphony provides opportunities for all wind and percussion players in the School. Its repertoire includes transcriptions of orchestral works, concerti, chamber ensembles, large symphonic band works and new music for the concert band. The Wind Symphony regularly features student, faculty and guest solo artists, and has given numerous Canadian and world premieres of contemporary works.

�BIOGRAPHIES
DAVID MICHAUX
David has been a member of the Victoria Symphony since 2001 and performed as Acting Principal Trumpet for over five seasons. Previously, he
held the positions of Principal Trumpet with the Okanagan Symphony and
Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with the National
Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, as guest Principal Trumpet with the CBC
Radio Orchestra, and the Pacific Baroque Orchestra. During the 2004-05
season he was a substitute member of the trumpet section of the Vancouver
Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the VSO regularly for twenty
years. He was also involved in recording music for the Opening Ceremonies
of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. He has performed as a soloist with the
Victoria, Thunder Bay, and Okanagan symphonies. David attended the University of Victoria (B.Mus), the University of British Columbia (M.Mus) and
he is an alumnus of both the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and the
Aspen Music Festival. His principal teachers were Vincent Cichowicz, Larry
Knopp and Louis Ranger. He has taught at the University of Victoria, Victoria
Conservatory, and the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific.
MATTHEW MCCONCHIE
Mr. McConchie graduated with a Bachelor of Music with Distinction from the
University of Victoria where he studied with Ian McDougall. Subsequent to
his studies at UVic, with the generous support of the Canada Council for the
Arts, Mr. McConchie earned a Masters in Music in Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he
studied with John Marcellus and Mark Kellogg. In July 2001, with the generous
support of the German Academic Exchange Service, Mr. McConchie competed a one-year program at the Hochschule fur Musik, Detmold, Germany,
studying with Heinze Fadle.
Mr. McConchie was a prize winner in the Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic
Trombone Competition at the International Trombone Association conference in 1999 and in the Montreal Symphony Solo Competition later that
year. He has performed with the Vancouver Island Symphony, Victoria Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra London, and the Toronto
Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. McConchie currently resides in Victoria and practises law in Duncan with
McDaniel and Company.

ROBERT BUCKLEY
Robert Buckley has a diverse career as a composer, arranger, performer,
producer, recording artist and conductor. In the pop world, he created
several albums and hit songs with labels such as CBS and A&M. The number
one single Letting Go won him a gold record. He conducted and arranged
for major artists such as Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Our Lady
Peace, Simple Plan and Aerosmith, to name a few. In the film and television
world, he scored numerous award-winning shows for Disney, Alliance, ABC,
FOX, CBS, PBS, CBC and the Cartoon Network. In the live stage world, he
composed music for contemporary dance, musicals and large-scale worldwide television events including the Calgary Olympics, the Victoria Commonwealth Games, the Vancouver Olympics and the FIFA World Cup Opening
Ceremony with Cirque Du Soleil. He composed This Is My Home for the
Canadian Pavilion at the World Expo – a song that has been performed
at every Canada Day since and has become a Canadian tradition. In the
concert world, his symphonic wind band compositions have been performed
worldwide. Robert was invited to be composer-in-residence at Troy University in Alabama, where a CD of his symphonic wind music was recorded,
called Continuum. Recently, he had the honour of recording a CD, called
Undercurrents, with the renowned Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy.
His concert music is published by Hal Leonard. Robert lives in Vancouver, BC
with his wife, choreographer and director, Marlise McCormick.
�ZACHARY SMITH
Zachary Smith was raised in Cranbrook B.C and started to love and play
music at a young age. He attended Mount Baker Secondary School where
his passion for writing music blossomed after taking the music composition
courses and the various music programs offered under the direction of Evan
Bueckert. Zach is a fourth year music composition major at the University
of Victoria and is currently studying saxophone under Wendell Clanton and
music composition under the tutelage of John Celona. This year Zach was
awarded the Phillip T. Young Memorial Scholarship for academic and musical
excellence. Zach has written many pieces over his years at UVic, including
works for orchestra, wind symphony, and voice. One of his works was performed to great acclaim at the University of Victoria Vocal Showcase in 2014.
Zach currently plays first alto saxophone in the UVic Wind Symphony which
has greatly influenced his writing style by being constantly immersed in such
great works. Some of Zach’s most influential composers are John Mackey,
Marc Mellits, and Igor Stravinsky. Zach’s compositions are known for their
sweeping melodic lines floating over rich sonorities. Zach is currently writing
an alto saxophone concerto which will be premiered early 2016.
