BIOGRAPHY
FAUSTINO DÍAZ is a trombonist, tubist, trumpeter and arranger hailing from a musical dynasty stretching back
over 100 years in the heart of Mexico. His musical studies began with his father, Rodolfo Díaz, before continuing on
to Mexico’s National Conservatory where he studied with Benjamin Alarcon. During his time at the conservatory,
he was a three-time winner of the winds division of the school’s concerto competition.
His principal teachers also include Jorgen van Rijen in the Roterdam Conservatorium, in the Netherlands and
Jacques Mauger in Lausanne Conservatoy, Switzerland. Faustino Díaz is the first trombonist from Latin America to
win an international trombone competition (Jeju, South Korea 2013), and has additionally taken third place (Budapest, Hungary 2016) and was selected as a finalist (Porcia, Italy 2011) in two others.
He has enjoyed positions with top-tier orchestras both in his home country and abroad, including the Zurich Opernhaus, Mexico City Philharmonic, UNAM Philharmonic, and the National Symphony Orchestra (Mexico). Díaz has
been frequently invited to play with two of the most renowned brass ensembles in the world, the Enrique Crespo
Brass and the Meridian Arts Ensemble.
Díaz is one of the foremost soloists of brass instruments in Latin America, Asia and Europe and is a champion of new
Latin American music. He has premiered several works by Mexican composers for trombone, tuba and trumpet, and
is a tireless advocate for music education in his home country. In addition to classical music, Faustino Díaz is one of
the most prominent musicians in Latin regional music.
His demanding solo schedule has precluded him from accepting several positions, including a tour on trumpet with
the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil. He is the founder and general director of the National Trombone Week festival held annually in Mexico, and in 2016 organized an educational tour throughout his home state of Oaxaca, visiting
20 cities, offering masterclasses, teaching lessons and performing for communities who might not otherwise have the
opportunity to hear a world-class soloist play on their doorstep.
Díaz currently performs as the Principal Trombone of the Daegu Symphony Orchestra in Daegu, South Korea. He is
a proud Yamaha Performing Artist and exclusively plays Yamaha instruments and K&G Mouthpieces.

BIOGRAPHY
Pianist Corey Hamm has established a unique musical profile performing widely in North America and in Asia as
both soloist and chamber musician. His CD of Frederic Rzewski’s hour-long solo piano epic The People United Will
Never Be Defeated! (Redshift Records) won Spotify’s Best Classical Recording 2014, and Best Classical Recording at
the 2014 Western Canadian Music Awards. He has performed the work over 80 times all over the world. Corey
Hamm’s extensive work in the 1990s with the great French composer Henri Dutilleux will come to fruition in his
plan to record Dutilleux’s complete works for solo piano and chamber with piano in the near future. Among his
other recording plans are CDs of solo works written for Corey by Michael Finnissy, Frederic Rzewski, John Psathas,
Alice Pingyee Ho, Adam Zolty, Claude Lapalme, Keith Hamel, Jocelyn Morlock, Jordan Nobles, Dorothy Chang, Ronn
Yedidia, and Duncan Maunders, and a CD with Nu:BC.
Corey Hamm has commissioned, premiered and recorded over four hundred works by composers from all over
the world. These commissions have been for solo piano, chamber music, and concerti. His most extensive collection
of commissioned works includes over 80 pieces for PEP (Piano and Erhu Project) with whom he has toured China.
To date the composers for the project come from China, Canada, UK, and the United States, and include Michael
Finnissy, GAO Ping, Brian Cherney, among many others. The result is a new and flourishing catalogue of works for
piano and erhu composed in the musical languages of the 21st century. PEP has released some of these works on
their PEP CDs,Vols. 1, 2, and 3 (Redshift).Volume 2 was nominated for Best Classical Recording at the 2015 Western
Canadian Music Awards.
Corey has commissioned over 50 works for The Nu:BC Collective and for Hammerhead Consort (two piano and
two percussion). As pianist for The Nu:BC Collective he has released the critically acclaimed CD Beyond Shadows
(Redshift), and as a founding member of Hammerhead Consort, he received the 1993 Sir Ernest Macmillan Memorial Foundation Chamber Music Award, and was winner of the 1992 National Chamber Music Competition.
In recent years, Corey Hamm has studied, recorded and toured one of the great piano works of the last decades,
Frederic Rzewski’s monumental hour-long solo piano epic, The People United Will Never Be Defeated!.This work, made
up of a theme and 36 variations, has been recorded by a small number of pianists including Marc-André Hamelin,
Ursula Oppens, and Stephen Drury. Frederic Rzewski received Corey Hamm’s interpretation as one of the finest to
date. “Excellent! Bravo! This may be the best recording.”
Corey Hamm premiered Dorothy Chang’s PEP Double Concerto for erhu and piano soloists, Gateways, with the
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO), and was soloist in the World Premiere of Jordan Nobles’ Piano Concerto
with Bramwell Tovey and the VSO. He gave the World Premiere of Howard Bashaw’s Concerto for Two Pianos and
Percussion with conductor Grzegorz Nowak and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and has recent and upcoming performances of Prokofiev’s Piano Concertos 2 and 3, Rachmaninoff ’s Piano Concertos 2 and 3, Bartok’s Piano
Concerto 2, Lutoslawski’s Piano Concerto, Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, Faure’s Fantasie Op. 111, and
Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
Dr. Hamm is Professor of Piano at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he was awarded the prestigious Killam Teaching Award, and the Dorothy Somerset Award for Artistic Excellence. He is on the Piano Faculty
of the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice (SICPP) at the New England Conservatory (NEC)
in Boston, MusicFest Perugia (MFP) in Italy, and the Great Lakes International School of Music (GLISM). His beloved
teachers include Lydia Artymiw, Marek Jablonski, Stéphane Lemelin, Ernesto Lejano, and Thelma Johannes O’Neill.

BIOGRAPHY
Praised for their “virtuosity, visceral expression, and rare unity of intention” (Boston Globe), the Viano Quartet is one of the
most sought-after performing young ensembles today and currently in-residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln
Center Bowers Program from 2024-2027. Since winning First Prize at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition,
they have traveled to nearly every major city across the globe, captivating audiences in New York, London, Berlin, Vancouver,
Paris, Beijing, Toronto, Lucerne, and Los Angeles.
In the past three years, the quartet organized a residency at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University,
where their focus was to coach young chamber groups and host presentations and side-by-side concerts with the SMU community. The quartet has also held residencies at the Curtis Institute, Colburn Conservatory, and Northern Michigan University.
Recently, they’ve been selected to be the inaugural group for a new guest residency at the Music in the Morning series in Vancouver until 2025, where they will commission new works and lead extensive community engagement initiatives.
The Viano Quartet released Portraits, their first EP, through the Curtis Studio Label in summer 2023. Available to stream on
all major music platforms, the recording is a final artistic statement of their time at the Curtis Institute, and features the beautiful Andante Moderato movement from Florence Price’s first string quartet. This summer the quartet was also re-invited to
Chamber Music Northwest, the Bravo!Vail Festival and BISQFest, and appeared at the Intimacy of Creativity Festival in Hong
Kong, Ottawa Chamberfest, Minnesota Beethoven Festival, Strings Music Festival, Highlands-Cashiers and Mt. Desert Festivals
of Chamber Music, as well as Bay Chamber Concerts. During the 23/24 season the quartet can be heard in Canada, Arizona,
Minnesota, Massachusetts, Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Utah, New York and California.
The quartet achieved incredible success in their formative years, with an unbroken streak of top prizes at major competitions.
In addition to their career-defining achievement at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, they also received
the Grand Prize at the 2019 ENKOR International Music Competition and second prize at the 2019 Yellow Springs Chamber
Music Competition. At the 2018 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition they received Third Prize, the Haydn
Prize for the best performance of a Haydn quartet, and the Sidney Griller Award for the best performance of the compulsory
work, Thomas Ades’ “The Four Quarters”. They received the Silver Medal at the 2018 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and Third Prize at the 9th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in 2017.
The Viano Quartet has collaborated with world-class musicians such as pianists Emanuel Ax, Marc-André Hamelin, Inon Barnatan and Elisso Virsaladze, violists Paul Coletti and Paul Neubauer, violinist Noah Bendix-Balgley, vocalist Fleur Barron and clarinetist David Shifrin. Their chief mentors include faculty of the Curtis Institute and Colburn Conservatory, as well as members
of the Dover, Guarneri, and Tokyo string quartets.
The name “Viano” was created to describe the four individual instruments in a string quartet interacting as one. Each of the
four instruments begins with the letter “v”, and like a piano, all four string instruments together play both harmony and melody,
creating a unified instrument called the “Viano.”

BIOGRAPHY
Milton Schlosser is a noted pianist, teacher, and scholar. He was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the
University of Alberta in 2018 and is now an Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria. The Toronto Star’s review of Milton’s CD 1890 exemplifies the type of artistry he is known for, acclaiming his playing for its “emotionally
expressive, powerfully intimate journeys through beautiful harmonies and counterpoint.”
During his university career, Milton was the recipient of numerous teaching- and research-related awards, including
a prestigious McCalla Professorship for his significant contributions to research, teaching, and learning. Based at the
University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus in Camrose, he also taught graduate-level piano pedagogy courses in
Edmonton.
Milton continues to be active as an artist. He has performed in live and broadcast performances as solo recitalist,
collaborative pianist, and soloist with orchestra. Solo recital engagements have taken him to China, Ireland, France,
Germany, the US, and Japan.
He has released five recordings that feature him as a soloist and collaborative pianist performing pieces drawn from
the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. Two of the recordings highlight works by renowned American composer
Frederic Rzewski, including one piece commissioned by Milton. He holds a Doctor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Alberta, where his primary mentors were Robert Stangeland and Stéphane Lemelin.
Alongside his activities as a pianist, Milton has published as a researcher and composer, has performed as organ
recitalist, and today trains and competes in triathlon events.
Two publications serve to illustrate his unique perspectives and diverse interests. “Music, the Liberal Arts, and Rural
Identity: The Not-So-Straight-Road” appears in the book Roads Taken: The Professorial life, Scholarship in Place, and the
Public Good. The chapter traces Milton’s career and the distinctive, quality teaching that can occur on a smaller-sized
liberal arts campus in a rural location. “Minding the music: Neuroscience, video recording, and the pianist” is found
in the International Journal of Music Education. The article offers best practices in the use of digital video equipment
by pianists through the examination of intersections between neuroscience, contemplative studies, and sport psychology.

MARTHA COOKE LEGACY FUND
With a generous gift from the estate of Martha Cooke, The Martha Cooke Visiting Artist Fund presents the first
of three visits to the University of Victoria School of Music by renowned pianist Minsoo Sohn. The Martha Cooke
bequest also establishes two substantial funds for piano maintenance at the School of Music. We are delighted that
Minsoo Sohn will return to present concerts and masterclasses in October of both 2024 and 2025. All ticket proceeds from Mr. Sohn’s concerts will go to the piano maintenance legacy fund.

BIOGRAPHY
Minsoo Sohn is a Korean American pianist known for his musical intelligence and masterful virtuosity. Described
by the New York Times as “a genuine artist, with a thoughtful and poetic interpretation” and the Boston Globe
as “born to play the piano,” Sohn continues to expand his reputation as one of the foremost pianists of his day.
Sohn has toured extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, Israel and Korea and has appeared in
important venues and festivals.
Sohn is particularly noted for his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The New York Times praised his Honens-label recording of the work as a “beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation,” placing it one of the top classical
recordings of 2011. His recordings have also received critical acclaim from the New Yorker Magazine, the Cleveland
Plain Dealer, Gramophone Magazine, the Calgary Herald and Toronto Star, among many others.
In 2020, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Mr. Sohn concluded his four year immersion in
the composer’s music, which has included concert performances, recordings and writings. Over the course of his
Beethoven project, Mr. Sohn performed and recorded the composer’s thirty-two sonatas in a series of recitals at the
Seoul Arts Center, and in recording sessions at Tongyeong Concert Hall. The recital series also included Beethoven’s
monumental Diabelli Variations and Bagatelles. Sony Classical released the highly anticipated nine-album set of “Complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas” in the Fall of 2020.
Mr. Sohn previously held positions at Michigan State University and Korean National University of Arts before joining
his alma mater,The New England Conservatory of Music, where he began teaching in the Fall of 2023. He is indebted
to Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun for guiding him to follow his bliss.

We acknowledge and respect the Lekwungen peoples on whose traditional territory
the university stands and the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples whose
historical relationships with the land continue to this day.
