Ithaca is a drama for the night. It follows the "life" of the
night, personified in the protagonist (played by Anna Shill).
In writing the piece it was my goal to re-contextualize the
cycle of night and day from a rational or even mythical basis
into a purely human perspective. For this reason the piece
begins at nightfall, with the birth of a naive and fearful night
who is dominated by the day (portrayed by Iain Gillis). Over
the course of the drama night comes to dominate the stage,
reaching her apex before beginning her inevitable descent and
death.
The title and relationship the piece shares to the Homeric tale
of Ulysses was used as a narrative archetype upon which to
project the character of night, a hero caught in the grip of
forces beyond her control and set upon a journey beset with
adversity, tragedy and triumph.
