Program Notes
To the Earth (1985)
This opening piece by American-born composer
Frederic Rzewski pairs four flowerpots with an
ancient Homeric hymn recited by the
performer. The text (translated into English
here), titled To the Earth, Mother of All, is a
simple prayer to Gaia, ancient Greek goddess of
the Earth. The light, hollow timbre of the clay
pots evokes the fragility of the Earth and the
environment that surrounds us. This fragile
nature has only become more apparent both
with increasing societal focus on climate change
and with a surge in the seasonal chaos of
hurricanes, tornadoes, and forest fires across
North America within the past decade.
Tchik (2003)
A staple snare drum solo played in competitions
worldwide, Tchik’s theme-and-variations
structure lends itself to a playful, festive
atmosphere. As the variations continue, a clear
Latin/Brazilian flavour develops both in terms of
rhythmic content, sound profile, and
performance technique. Throughout the piece,
a wide range of sounds is drawn out of the
drum, which further blends with the
performer’s voice towards the final variations.
Then, as abruptly as it began, the piece fades
into the distance in the manner of a lively
festival parade passing down the street.
Vignettes (2005)
Written for trumpeter Eric Berlin and
percussionist Eduardo Leandro, most of the 8
total short movements of the Vignettes are
based on real-life musical characters. These
include jazz vibraphonist Lionel Hampton,
composer Igor Stravinsky, and both Berlin and
Leandro themselves. As Berlin’s former upstairs
neighbour in the New England Conservatory
dormitory, Stephenson used the apartment-like
living situation as inspiration for both the idea
of a group of short character snippets and the
musical theory idea of a “lower neighbour”
tone, which permeates the harmony and
melody throughout most of the movements.
Tonight, 6 of the 8 movements will be
performed (including a somewhat tongue-incheek “encore” movement).

Apollo’s Touch (1992)
Penned by the Victoria Symphony’s own
Composer-in-Residence, Rodney Sharman,
Apollo’s Touch takes the listener on a trancelike journey through slowly shifting tonal
planes. The static harmonic content in each
section allows the soundwaves emanating from
different vibraphone keys to interact and
combine to create some uniquely hypnotic tone
qualities. The opening measures came suddenly
to Sharman as he was working on a larger piece
for soprano voice and orchestra, and he was
thus drawn to the contrasting intimacy of solo
vibraphone.
Apollo’s Touch seemed to slowly reveal its own
artistic needs to Sharman over the long 2 years
of its composition, resulting in a working
process that felt like the intent of some
extraneous force. This process brought about
the titular reference to Apollo, the ancient
Greek god of music and dance.
Luminosity (2010)
Polish marimbist Tomasz Golinski is one of the
leading composer/performers of the marimba
within the past twenty years, having won
multiple composition and performance awards
in international competitions worldwide. He has
also studied extensively with some of the
leading players of previous generations,
including Ludwig Albert and Keiko Abe.
Luminosity, Golinski’s first-prize winning
composition for the Universal Marimba
Competition 2010, consists of two contrasting
movements. The first creates a dark, pensive
atmosphere with subtle, shadowy harmony and
a deliberate pace of rhythm. The second
movement contains many virtuosic, fiery, and
furious sections that will challenge any
performer, interspersed with moments of quiet
beauty. However, both movements are steeped
in harmonic content strongly reminiscent of
Ravel, Dukas, and other French composers of
the early twentieth century. This blend between
the darkness of the first movement and the
burning light of the second is from where the
name of the piece is drawn: The faint glow of
light as it approaches the dark.

Musique de Table (1989)
Composed by French film director Thierry de
Mey, Musique de Table sits three performers in
a row, each paired with a wooden board.
Contact microphones are attached to each
piece of wood, which will amplify the sounds
created by scratching, flicking, and hitting the
boards in various ways. As a director, de Mey
has made the visual elements of the
performers’ movements a key feature of this
work, lending it a ritualistic atmosphere similar
to Rzewski’s To the Earth. Owing to the way
that the performers bounce thematic ideas off
each other, one can almost imagine the soft
glow of a desk lamp illuminating a late-night
study session!

Program Notes
La Serenata / Aprile
Italian composer Paolo Tosti (1846-1916) is known for writing for the voice, with his light and
expressive style that lends itself to vocal embellishment. He was an influential figure in music
during La Belle Époque, and most notable classical singers have recorded his vocal works.
Although the works of Tosti don’t fit into the small box of Italian music most North American
people are familiar with, it is the songs of composers such as Tosti that bridge the gap to the
Italian culture that is so cherished on that side of the world.
Winter Words, Op. 5
Benjamin Britten’s song cycle Winter Words is set to a compilation of poems by Thomas Hardy,
famous English poet and author. Britten himself found Hardy’s poetry deeply moving. The cycle
was premiered in Leeds, sung by Peter Pears; Britten’s partner in both life and music. Britten
was afraid people would find this cycle “difficult or elusive”, as it delves into themes such as the
lost innocence of youth, human consciousness, and existence. But just as elusive pieces can
breed confusion, I believe the ability to make one’s own interpretation is very important for this
cycle, and it is so interesting to see what each person’s Winter Words mean to them.
Platée “Que ce séjour est agréable”:
Written for the wedding of the Dauphin in 1745, Platée remains a model of French Baroque
opera today. The story follows the unattractive and detestable frog-like water-nymph Platée who believes she is the most alluring - and how she’s convinced in an unfortunate ploy that the
King of the Gods (Jupiter) is in love with her. In hopes that Jupiter can cure his wife Juno of her
jealous reproaches, we are lead through this tragic, yet comedic story of false-love and
humiliation.
Before Jupiter steps in, we are first introduced to Platée in this scene as she fantasizes about her
love for King Kithairon.
Hippolyte et Aricie “Ah! faut-il en un jour”
Hippolyte et Aricie, Rameau’s first opera, based on the French tragedy of Phèdre, was premiered
in 1733. Phèdre, thinking her husband (Theseus) is dead, confesses her love for her stepson,
Hippolyte. However, Hippolyte’s declaration of love for the foreign princess Aricie arouses
anger in Phèdre. Theseus then returns home alive and believes his son has made advances on
Phèdre. Out of anger he banishes his son from the land and all whom he loves, thus setting the
scene for this aria.
Liederkreis, Op. 24
Written for Clara Wieck in Schumann’s “year of song” (1840) in anticipation of their wedding,
this book of song was gifted to her wrapped in flowers and gold tinsel. Op. 24 is the first piece of
vocal music Schumann ever composed. Fulfilled by this endeavour, Schumann expressed his
excitement in a letter to Wieck; “Ah Clara, what bliss it is to write for the voice, I’ve needed it
for a long time.” Though Schumann’s Op. 39 of the same title is often given more recognition
and favoured, Op. 24 is an important work that provides us with a glimpse into his deep musical
and emotional connection to his beloved Clara. Though the poetry and overall theme of this
cycle is unrequited love, it comes with an intense irony that Schumann would use this text as the
ultimate love letter.

La Serenata

The Serenade

Vola, o serenata:
La mia diletta è sola,
e, con la bella testa abbandonata,
posa tra le lenzuola:
O serenata, vola.
O serenata, vola.

Fly, o serenade:
My beloved is alone,
with her beautiful head abandoned
lie among the sheets:
O serenade, fly.
O serenade, fly.

Splende Pura la luna,
l'ale il silenzio stende,
e dietro i veni dell'alcova
bruna la lampada s'accende.
Pure la luna splende.
Pure la luna splende.

Shines pure the moon,
The-wings of silence extend,
and behind the veils of the dark alcove
the lamp is-lit.
Pure the moon shines.
Pure the moon shines.

Vola, o serenata,
Vola, o serenata, vola.
Ah! là. Ah! là.

Fly, o serenade,
Fly, o serenade, fly.
Ah! là. Ah! là.

Vola, o serenata:
La mia diletta è sola,
ma sorridendo ancor mezzo assonnata,
torna fra le lenzuola:
O serenata, vola.
O serenata, vola.

Fly, o serenade:
My beloved is alone,
but smiling and still half asleep,
she-returns among the sheets:
O serenade, fly.
O serenade, fly.

L'onda sogna su 'l lido,
e 'l vento su la fronda;
e a' baci miei ricusa ancore un nido
la mia signora bionda.
Sogna su 'l lido l'onda.
Sogna su 'l lido l'onda.

The waves dream on the shore,
and the wind [blows] through the branches;
and my kisses don’t result in a nest [being offered],
by my blonde lady.
Dreaming on the shore, [are] the waves.
Dreaming on the shore, [are] the waves.

Vola, o serenata,
Vola, o serenata, vola.
Ah! là. Ah! là.

Fly, o serenade.
Fly, o serenade, fly.
Ah! là. Ah! là.

Aprile

April

Non senti tu ne l'aria
il profumo che spande Primavera?
Non senti tu ne l'anima
il suon de nova voce lusinghiera?
È l'April! È la stagion d'amore!
Deh! vieni, o mia gentil
su' prati'n fiore!

Do you not smell in the air
the perfume that Spring breathes out?
Do you not hear in your soul
the sound of a new, enticing voice?
It's April! It's the season of love!
Come, lovely one,
to the flowery meadow!

Il piè trarrai fra mammole,
avrai su'l petto rose e cilestrine,
e le farfalle candide
t'aleggeranno intorno al nero crine.
È l'April! È la stagion d'amore!
Deh! vieni, o mia gentil
su' prati'n fiore!

Your foot will tread among violets,
you will wear roses and bluebells,
and the white butterflies
will flutter around your black hair.
It's April! It's the season of love!
Please come, my lovely one,
to the flowery meadow!

“Que ce séjour est agréable”

“How agreeable is this place!”

Platée:
Que ce séjour est agréable !
Qu’il est aimable !
Ah, qu’il est favorable,
Pour qui veut bien perdre sa liberté !

How agreeable is this place!
How aimable it is!
Ah how favourable it is
For whomever is ready to forsake his liberty!

Dis-moi, mon cœur, t’es-tu bien consulté ?
Ah, mon cœur, tu t’agites !
Ah, mon cœur, tu me quittes !
Est-ce pour Cithéron ? T’a-t-il bien mérité ?

Tell me, my heart, have you well considered?
Ah, my heart, you are fretting!
Ah, my heart, you are abandoning me!
Is it for the sake of Kithaeron? Is he really worthy of you?

Que ce séjour est agréable !
Qu’il est aimable !
Ah, qu’il est favorable,
Pour qui veut bien perdre sa liberté !

How delightful is this place!
How charming it is!
Ah how propitious it is
For whomever is ready to forsake his liberty!

“Ah! faut-il en un jour”

“Ah! Must I, in a single day”

Hippolyte:
Ah ! faut-il, en un jour, perdre tout ce que j'aime?
Mon père pour jamais me bannit de ces lieux
Si chéris de Diane même.
Je ne verrai plus les beaux yeux
Qui faisaient mon bonheur suprême.

Ah! Must I, in a single day, lose all that I love?
My father banishes me for-ever from this place
so cherished by Diana herself.
I shall no more see the lovely eyes
that made my happiness complete.

Ah! Must I, in a single day, lose all that I love?
Both the misfortunes I fear and the benefits I lose,
all overwhelm my heart with extreme anguish.
Under the dreadful cloud which covers my life,
what, in the eyes of the world, will become of my glory?

Ah ! faut-il, en un jour, perdre tout ce que j'aime?

Ah! Must!, in a single day, lose all that I love?

Liederkreis Op. 24
Morgens steh’ ich auf und frage
German source: Heinrich Heine

Every morning I awake and ask
English translation © Richard Stokes

Morgens steh’ ich auf und frage:
Kommt feins Liebchen heut?
Abends sink’ ich hin und klage:
Ausblieb sie auch heut.

Every morning I awake and ask:
Will my sweetheart come today?
Every evening I lie down,
Complaining that she did not appear.

In der Nacht mit meinem Kummer
Lieg’ ich schlaflos, lieg’ ich wach;
Träumend, wie im halben Schlummer,
Wandle ich bei Tag.

All night long with my grief
I lie sleepless, lie awake;
Dreaming, as if half asleep,
I wander through the day.

Es treibt mich hin
German source: Heinrich Heine

I’m driven this way
English translation © Richard Stokes

Es treibt mich hin, es treibt mich her!
Noch wenige Stunden, dann soll ich sie schauen,
Sie selber, die schönste der schönen Jungfrauen;
Du armes Herz, was pochst du so schwer?

I’m driven this way, driven that!
A few more hours, and I shall see her,
She, the fairest of the fair—
Faithful heart, why pound so hard?

Die Stunden sind aber ein faules Volk!
Schleppen sich behaglich träge,
Schleichen gähnend ihre Wege;—
Tummle dich, du faules Volk!

But the Hours are a lazy breed!
They dawdle along and take their time,
Crawl yawningly on their way—
Get a move on, you lazy breed!

Tobende Eile mich treibend erfasst!
Aber wohl niemals liebten die Horen;—
Heimlich im grausamen Bunde verschworen,
Spotten sich tückisch der Liebenden Hast.

Raging haste drives me onward!
But the Horae can never have loved—
Cruelly and secretly in league,
They spitefully mock a lover’s haste.

Ich wandelte unter den Bäumen
German source: Heinrich Heine

I wandered among the trees
English translation © Richard Stokes

Ich wandelte unter den Bäumen
Mit meinem Gram allein;
Da kam das alte Träumen,
Und schlich mir ins Herz hinein.

I wandered among the trees,
Alone with my own grief,
But then old dreams returned once more
And stole into my heart.

Wer hat euch dies Wörtlein gelehret,
Ihr Vöglein in luftiger Höh’?
Schweigt still! wenn mein Herz es höret,
Dann tut es noch einmal so weh.

Who taught you this little word,
You birds up there in the breeze?
Be silent! If my heart hears it,
My pain will return once more.

„Es kam ein Jungfräulein gegangen,
Die sang es immerfort,
Da haben wir Vöglein gefangen
Das hübsche, goldne Wort.“

‘A young woman once passed by,
Who sang it again and again,
And so we birds snatched it up,
That lovely golden word.’

Das sollt ihr mir nicht erzählen,
Ihr Vöglein wunderschlau;
Ihr wollt meinen Kummer mir stehlen,
Ich aber niemanden trau’.

You should not tell me such things,
You little cunning birds,

Lieb’ Liebchen
German source: Heinrich Heine

Lay your hand, my love
English translation © Richard Stokes

Lieb Liebchen, leg’s Händchen aufs Herze mein;
Ach, hörst du, wie ‘s pochet im Kämmerlein?
Da hauset ein Zimmermann schlimm und arg,
Der zimmert mir einen Totensarg.

Just lay your hand on my heart, my love;
Ah, can you not hear it throbbing in there?
A carpenter, wicked and evil, lives there,
Fashioning me my coffin.

Es hämmert und klopfet bei Tag und bei Nacht;
Es hat mich schon längst um den Schlaf gebracht.
Ach! sputet Euch, Meister Zimmermann,
Damit ich balde schlafen kann.

He bangs and hammers day and night,
And has long since banished all sleep.
Ah, master carpenter, make haste,
That I might soon find rest.

Schöne Wiege meiner Leiden
German source: Heinrich Heine

Lovely cradle of my sorrows
English translation © Richard Stokes

Schöne Wiege meiner Leiden,
Schönes Grabmal meiner Ruh’,
Schöne Stadt, wir müssen scheiden,—
Lebe wohl! ruf’ ich dir zu.

Lovely cradle of my sorrows,
Lovely tombstone of my peace,
Lovely city, we must part—
Farewell! I call to you.

Lebe wohl, du heil’ge Schwelle,
Wo da wandelt Liebchen traut;
Lebe wohl! du heil’ge Stelle,
Wo ich sie zuerst geschaut.

Farewell, O sacred threshold,
Where my dear beloved treads,
Farewell! O sacred spot,
Where I first beheld her.

Hätt’ ich dich doch nie gesehen,
Schöne Herzenskönigin!
Nimmer wär es dann geschehen,
Dass ich jetzt so elend bin.

Had I never seen you though,
Fair queen of my heart!
It would never then have come to pass
That I am now so wretched.

Nie wollt’ ich dein Herze rühren,
Liebe hab’ ich nie erfleht;
Nur ein stilles Leben führen
Wollt’ ich, wo dein Odem weht.

I never wished to touch your heart,
I never begged for love,
To live in peace was all I wished,
And to breathe the air you breathed.

Doch du drängst mich selbst von hinnen,
Bittre Worte spricht dein Mund;
Wahnsinn wühlt in meinen Sinnen,
Und mein Herz ist krank und wund.

But you yourself, you drive me hence,
Your lips speak bitter words;
Madness rages in my mind,
And my heart is sick and sore.

Und die Glieder matt und träge
Schlepp’ ich fort am Wanderstab,
Bis mein müdes Haupt ich lege
Ferne in ein kühles Grab.

And my limbs, weary and feeble,
I drag away, my staff in hand,
Until I lay my tired head down
In a cool and distant grave.

Warte, warte wilder Schiffmann
German source: Heinrich Heine

Wait, O Wait, Wild Seaman
English translation © Richard Stokes

Warte, warte, wilder Schiffmann,
Gleich folg’ ich zum Hafen dir;
Von zwei Jungfraun nehm’ ich Abschied,
Von Europa und von Ihr.

Wait, O wait, wild seaman,
Soon I’ll follow to the harbour;
I’m taking leave of two maidens:
Of Europe and of her.

Blutquell, rinn’ aus meinen Augen,
Blutquell, brich aus meinem Leib,
Dass ich mit dem heissen Blute
Meine Schmerzen niederschreib’.

Stream from my eyes, O blood,
Gush from my body, O blood,
That with my hot blood
I may write down my agonies.

Ei, mein Lieb, warum just heute
Schaudert dich, mein Blut zu sehn?
Sahst mich bleich und herzeblutend
Lange Jahre vor dir stehn!

Why today of all days, my love,
Do you shudder to see my blood?
You’ve seen me pale and with bleeding heart
Stand before you for years on end!

Kennst du noch das alte Liedchen
Von der Schlang’ im Paradies,
Die durch schlimme Apfelgabe
Unsern Ahn ins Elend stiess?

Remember the old story
Of the serpent in Paradise,
Who, through the evil gift of an apple,
Plunged our forbears into woe?

Alles Unheil brachten Äpfel!
Eva bracht’ damit den Tod,
Eris brachte Trojas Flammen,
Du bracht’st beides, Flamm’ und Tod.

The apple has caused all our ills!
Eve brought death with it,
Eris brought flames to Troy,
And you—both flames and death.

Berg und Burgen schaun herunter
German source: Heinrich Heine

Mountains and castles gaze down
English translation © Richard Stokes

Berg’ und Burgen schaun herunter
In den spiegelhellen Rhein,
Und mein Schiffchen segelt munter,
Rings umglänzt von Sonnenschein.

Mountains and castles gaze down
Into the mirror-bright Rhine,
And my little boat sails merrilly,
The sunshine glistening around it.

Ruhig seh’ ich zu dem Spiele
Goldner Wellen, kraus bewegt;
Still erwachen die Gefühle,
Die ich tief im Busen hegt’.

Calmly I watch the play
Of golden, ruffled waves surging;
Silently feelings awaken in me
That I had kept deep in my heart.

Freundlich grüssend und verheissend
Lockt hinab des Stromes Pracht;
Doch ich kenn’ ihn, oben gleissend,
Bringt sein Innres Tod und Nacht.

With friendly greetings and promises,
The river’s splendour beckons;
But I know it—gleaming above
It conceals within itself Death and Night.

Oben Lust, in Busen Tücken,
Strom, du bist der Liebsten Bild!
Die kann auch so freundlich nicken,
Lächelt auch so fromm und mild.

Above, pleasure; at heart, malice;
River, you are the image of my beloved!
She can nod with just as much friendliness,
And smile so devotedly and gently.

Anfangs wollt’ ich fast verzagen
German source: Heinrich Heine

At first I almost despaired
English translation © Richard Stokes

Anfangs wollt’ ich fast verzagen,
Und ich glaubt’, ich trüg’ es nie;
Und ich hab’ es doch getragen—
Aber fragt mich nur nicht, wie?

At first I almost despaired,
And I thought I could never be able to bear it;
Yet even so, I have borne it—
But do not ask me how.

Mit Myrten und Rosen
German source: Heinrich Heine

With myrtles and roses
English translation © Richard Stokes

Mit Myrthen und Rosen, lieblich und hold,
Mit duft’gen Zypressen und Flittergold,
Möcht’ ich zieren dies Buch wie ’nen Totenschrein,
Und sargen meine Lieder hinein.

With myrtles and roses, sweet and fair,
With fragrant cypress and golden tinsel,
I should like to adorn this book like a coffin
And bury my songs inside.

O könnt’ ich die Liebe sargen hinzu!
Auf dem Grabe der Liebe wächst Blümlein der Ruh’,
Da blüht es hervor, da pflückt man es ab,—
Doch mir blüht’s nur, wenn ich selber im Grab.

Could I but bury my love here too!
On Love’s grave grows the flower of peace,
There it blossoms, there is plucked,
But only when I’m buried will it bloom for me.

Hier sind nun die Lieder, die einst so wild,
Wie ein Lavastrom, der dem Ätna entquillt,
Hervorgestürzt aus dem tiefsten Gemüt,
Und rings viel blitzende Funken versprüht!

Here now are the songs which once cascaded,
Like a stream of lava pouring from Etna,
So wildly from the depths of my soul,
And scattered glittering sparks all around!

Nun liegen sie stumm und totengleich,
Nun starren sie kalt und nebelbleich,
Doch aufs neu’ die alte Glut sie belebt,
Wenn der Liebe Geist einst über sie schwebt.

Now they lie mute, as though they were dead,
Now they stare coldly, as pale as mist,
But the old glow shall kindle them once more,
When the spirit of Love floats over them.

Und es wird mir im Herzen viel Ahnung laut:
Der Liebe Geist einst über sie taut;
Einst kommt dies Buch in deine Hand,
Du süsses Lieb im fernen Land.

And a thought speaks loud within my heart,
That the spirit of Love will one day thaw them;
One day this book will fall into your hands,
My dearest love, in a distant land.

Dann löst sich des Liedes Zauberbann,
Die blassen Buchstaben schaun dich an,
Sie schauen dir flehend ins schöne Aug’,
Und flüstern mit Wehmut und Liebeshauch.

Then shall song’s magic spell break free,
And the pallid letters shall gaze at you,
Gaze imploringly into your beautiful eyes,
And whisper with sadness and the breath of love.

This recital is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements
for the Master of Music (Performance) program.

Prayer of Saint Gregory, Alan Hovhaness
Alan Hovhaness is an American composer or Armenian and Scottish descent. Saint Gregory is
known as the bringer of light in the Armenian Apostolic Church. Prayer for Saint Gregory paints
a picture of a prayer for light in a dark world.
Concerto for Trumpet in E Flat Major, Johann Baptist Georg Neruda
Initially written for the French horn, Neruda’s Concerto in Eb is a staple in classical trumpet
repertoire. Composed in the overlap between the baroque and classical periods the piece
combines the intricacy of the baroque with the melodic inclinations of the classical period. This
piece is composed primarily using the method of composition known as fortspinnung, where a
simple theme is “spun out” during several interconnected phrases.
Vignettes for Trumpet and Percussion, James Stephenson
Vignettes for Trumpet and Percussion, by James Stephenson showcases a variety of
instruments. The percussion part includes marimba, vibraphone, snare drum, wood block,
triangle, and tambourine. The trumpet part includes the C trumpet, flugelhorn, and cornet.
Each movement is uniquely inspired by musicians like Lional Hampton and Igor Stravinsky, and
by art pieces such as White on White by Kazimir Malevich. The seventh movement, MAX is
based on a poem by Matthew Neall which alludes to Where the Wild Things Are a book by
Maurice Sendak. The poem can be found below.
Where do the wild things go?
On a Yacht of full sail,
To a port of Monaco,
Ocean bottom strewn with shale.
Travelers following tidal flow
Sea salt air fresh to inhale
Pillars of wind weave through the blow
Beauty as such I’d never seen
Shining bright with golden glow,
As the shore recedes I know,
That this is where the wild things go.
This is where the wild things go.

All That Glitters, Dorothy Chang
Written for Adam Zinatelli, All That Glitters was premiered on November 26, 2023 in Calgary.
This is the second performance of this work. The first movement, Romanze, consists of a theme
that is expanded throughout the movement. A straight mute and felt bag are used to create
unique sonorities. The second movement, Agitation, uses complex harmon mute choreography
and intense articulation to convey anxious energy and powerful emotion. The third movement
Waiting, depicts feelings of waiting for someone or something that will never come.
Someone to Watch Over Me, George Gershwin
Someone to Watch Over Me, was written by George Gershwin, with lyrics by his brother Ira.
Initially George Gershwin intended for the piece to be an up-tempo number but his brother
convinced him otherwise. This arrangement by Joseph Turrin for Phillip Smith, a prominent
orchestral trumpet player, is a beautiful and poignant take on the standard.

Translations
“Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille”
Les oiseaux dans la charmille
Dans les cieux l'astre du jour,
Tout parle à la jeune fille d'amour!
Tout parle d'amour!

The birds in the bower
In the heavens the star of day,
Everything speaks to the young girl of love!
Everythinng speaks of love!

Voilà la chanson gentile
La chanson d'Olympia ah!
D'Olympia

There the nice song
The song of Olympia ah!
Of Olympia

Tout ce qui chante résonne
Et soupire, tour à tour,
Émeut son coeur qui frissonne
Qui frissonne
Tout parle d'amour!

Everything that sings resonates
and sighs in turn,
moves his shuddering heart
Who shivers
Everything speaks of love!

Voilà la chanson mignonne
La chanson d'Olympia
D'Olympia!

Here is the cute song
The song of Olympia
Of Olympia!

“Tornami a Vagheggiar”
Tornami a vagheggiar
te solo vuol amar,
quest’anima fedel,
caro mio bene.

Come back to me desire
only you it wants to love
this faithful soul
My dear beloved.

Già ti donai il mio cor,
fido sarà il mio amor,
ma ti sarò crudel,
cara mia spene.

Already I gave you my heart
my love will be faithful
never will I be cruel to you
my dear hopes.
‘‘Der Hirt auf dem Felsen‘‘

Wenn auf dem höchsten Fels ich steh’,
In’s tiefe Tal hernieder seh’,
Und singe,

When on the highest rock I stand,
In the deep valley looking down,
And sing,

Fern aus dem tiefen denkeln Tal
Schwingt sich empor der Wiederhall
Der Klüfte.

Far from the deep dark valley
Swings up the echo
From the ravines.

Je weiter meine Stimme dringt,
Je heller sie mir wiederklingt
Von unten.
Mein Liebchen wohnt so weit von mir,
Drum sehn ’ich mich so heiß nach ihr
Hinüber.

The farther my voice penetrates,
The brighter it resonates with me
From below.
My sweetheart lives so far from me,
Therefore I long for her so badly
Over there.

In tiefem Gram verzehr ’ich mich,
Mir ist die Freude hin,
Auf Erden mir die Hoffnung wich,
Ich hier so einsam bin.

In deep grief consuming me,
I am no longer happy,
On earth I lost hope,
I am so lonely here.

So sehnend klang im Wald das Lied,
So sehnend klang es durch die Nacht.
Die Herzen es zum Himmel zieht
Mit wunderbarer Macht.

The song rang in the forest longing,
The song rang in the night longing.
The hearts are drawn to heaven
With wonderful power.

Der Frühling will kommen,
Der Frühling, meine Freud,
Nun mach ich mich fertig
Zum Wandern bereit.

Spring is coming,
Spring, my friend,
Now I’m getting ready
Ready for hiking.

Program Notes
12 Poems of Emily Dickinson
The 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson is a song cycle written by Aaron Copland, using the text of
twelve poems by American poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). Composed in New York between
1949-1950, these songs center around no singular theme. Instead, they follow the subjects
Emily Dickinson primarily wrote about: life, death, nature, and eternity. The seventh and the
twelfth songs are the only two selections that relate thematically. Copland weaves the pieces
together to create a stunning arc of music that has given the songs, and Dickinson’s words, their
own unique personality. Except for number twelve, each piece is dedicated to one of Copland’s
composer friends.

‘’Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille’’ (‘’The Doll Song’’)
Also known as Olympia’s Aria, The Doll Song is an aria for coloratura soprano from Jacques
Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). Olympia is a wind-up doll who has
caught the eye of Hoffmann, who, not realizing she is a doll, falls deeply in love with her.
Despite encountering some mechanical issues along the way, Olympia dazzles him at a party
with her brilliant aria ‘’Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille’’. Based on three short stories by E.T. A.

Hoffmann (1776-1822), who also happens to be the protagonist of the story, Offenbach’s opéra
fantastique tells the story of Hoffmann’s three unfortunate love affairs, Olympia’s being told in
Act two.

‘’Tornami a Vagheggiar’’
Alcina, written by Handel in 1735, is a Baroque opera about a seductive sorceress, Alcina, who
lures men to her island with her magic. A young woman named Bradamante disguises herself as
her brother ‘Ricciardo” and arrives on the island to rescue her fiancé Ruggiero. There they
encounter Alcina’s sister, Morganna, who instantly falls in love with Ricciardo. This aria is sung
at the end of Act 1, by Morganna, who is passionately expressing her love for Ricciardo (still
Bradamante in disguise).

Concerto for Coloratura Soprano Op. 82 Andante
Composed by Reinhold Gliere in 1943, the first movement of this concerto (also known as the
andante section) is a vocalise normally accompanied by orchestra with the coloratura soprano
as the soloist. Vocalises are musical compositions consisting of the singing of melody with
vowel songs. The difference between a vocalise and other repertoire with text is that within a
vocal ease the singer has more room to act as another instrument, weaving in and out with the
orchestra. Typically the Andante section, which is more sweeping and melodic, is followed by
the Allegro section, which shows off the brilliance of the coloratura voice.

‘’Fierce Night’’
Jonathan Dove’s opera Flight (1998) tells the story of a group of strangers who meet at an
airport. When all flights are grounded due to a violent electrical storm, the traveller’s hidden
desires are slowly revealed as they wait out their cancelled flights. This aria is sung by the
Controller, who is shouting her rage at the storm, and the eerily full airport.

‘‘Der Hirt auf dem Felsen‘‘
Also known in English as ‘’The Shepherd on the Rocks’’, Franz Schubert scored this Lied for
soprano, clarinet, and piano. Schubert composed this piece in 1828 during the final months of
his life. Schubert paints a picture of a Shepherd who is yearning for his lost love. This piece is
split into three different sections that describe the Shepherd’s heartbreak. In the first section,
the Shepherd is looking into the alpine valley and is reflecting on how lonely he is. The section
describes how the Shepherd is lamenting at his solitude, while the third section has him
rejoicing for Spring.
