BIOGRAPHIES
Lafayette String Quartet
How do you compress a full 32 years together into a single comprehensive biography? The
members of the LSQ are Artists-in-Residence at the University of Victoria where they
teach violin, viola, cello and coach chamber music to some of Canada’s finest young
string players. They are active in the Victoria community working with young people
in the GVYO, connecting with the strings program in the public schools, performing in
Pacific Baroque, hosting Quartet Fest West and continuing their annual Health Awareness Forum every fall. They are frequently sought-after to adjudicate in local, provincial
and national music festivals. All of this while maintaining an active touring schedule
with concerts this year taking them to Mexico, the Unites States, the Yukon, Saskatchewan, BC and Ontario. They have performed all over North America and Europe and
are always met with critical acclaim. Their various quartet projects, often in partnership with esteemed colleagues, have included the Complete Beethoven Cycle, the
Second Viennese School, Bartók’s Legacy and the Complete Cycle of Shostakovich
String Quartets. Upcoming projects include performing the complete viola quintets
of Mozart (with Yariv Aloni, 2019), and Beethoven’s Legacy (2020) honouring one of
their favourite composer’s 250th anniversary by exploring the friendships and influences that lead to the Beethoven Quartet phenomenon. The LSQ and colleagues will
delve into how these remarkable quartets changed the course of musical history and
continues to change it even today.
Yariv Aloni, viola
Beloved colleague Yariv Aloni is one of Victoria’s most artistically involved musicians.
A wonderful conductor as well as violist, Aloni is the Artistic Director of the Victoria
Chamber Orchestra, the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, principal guest conductor
of the West Coast Symphony Orchestra in Vancouver and has recently been appointed Artistic Director of the Sooke Philharmonic. As the violist of both the Penderecki
String Quartet and the Aviv Piano Quartet, he has performed in many concert halls
around the world. A regular guest with the Vetta Ensemble, he continues to perform in
various combinations at numerous chamber music concerts, festivals and recital series
all over Canada. Aloni will be performing the complete Mozart viola quintets with the
Lafayette String Quartet this year.
Bruce Vogt
Canadian pianist Bruce Vogt was born in Southern Ontario but for the past 36 years
has lived and worked in Victoria, BC and has taught at the University of Victoria as
Professor of Piano. As a soloist he has appeared regularly in concerts within Canada
and he tours yearly in many countries throughout Europe and Asia. His repertoire
encompasses music from the sixteenth century to the present. In addition to having
a special affinity for the music of Franz Liszt, he has both performed on period
instruments and commissioned and premiered a number of new works.

TEXT
Merciless Beauty by Ralph Vaughan Williams
Text by Geoffrey Chaucer

I.Your eyen two
Your eyën two will slay me suddenly:
I may the beauty of them not sustene,
So woundeth it throughout my hertë ken.
And but your word will helen hastily
My hertës woundë, while that it is green,
Your eyën two will slay me suddenly:
I may the beauty of them not sustene,
Upon my troth I say to you faithfully,
That ye be my life and death the queen,
For with my death the truthë shall be seen:
Your eyën two will slay me suddenly:
I may the beauty of them not sustene,
So woundeth it throughout my hertë kene.
II. So hath your beauty
So hath your beauty from your hertë chased
Pity, that me ne availeth not to plain:
For Daunger halt your mercy in his chain.
Guiltless my death thus have ye me purchased;
I say you sooth, me needeth not to feign:
So hath your beauty from your hertë chased
Pity, that me ne availeth not to plain.
Alas! That nature hath in you compassed
So great beauty, that no man may attain
To mercy, though he stervë for the pain!
So hath your beauty from your hertë chased
Pity, that me ne availeth not to plain:
For Daunger halt your mercy in his chain.
III. Since I from love
Since I from Love escapëd am so fat,
I never think to ben in his prison lean;
Since I am free, I count him not a bean.
He may answer, and sayë this or that;
I do not force, I speak right as I mean:
Since I from Love escapëd am so fat,
I never think to ben in his prison lean;
Love hath my name y-strike out of his sclat,
And he is strike out of my bookës clean
For evermore; there is none other mean.
Since I from Love escapëd am so fat,
I never think to ben in his prison lean;
Since I am free, I count him not a bean.

BIOGRAPHIES
Patrick Boyle, Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at UVic, is a fearless sonic
explorer driven by discovery. His frontiers are in performance (trumpet and
guitar), improvisation, composition and education. Originally from Newfoundland, Dr. Boyle appears on over 50 commercial releases and 3 acclaimed
solo albums. CBC Radio has called him a “trumpet personality” and “one of
Canada’s top jazz musicians.”

Tom Vickery is a leading figure on the West Coast jazz scene. Equally
talented on both trumpet and piano, in 1993 he participated in a national
tour of Canada with the Canadian Forces Jazz Quintet for the Department
of National Defense. For the past 10 years he has played with the awardwinning Dixieland Express Jazz Band, and the Tom Vickery Trio has been the
house band at Hermann’s Jazz Club for more than 14 years.

Don Cox plays tuba, double bass, and electric bass. He is one of the most
in-demand musicians in Victoria, BC. Don is an integral member of the
Capital City Syncopators: a modern take on prohibition-era jazz and country
swing. Don’s tuba lays down the foundation of this eccentric 5-piece playing
hot jazz, novelty songs, and hits from the 1980’s.

Toronto-based drummer Morgan Childs has built an international career as
a performer and educator with some of the world’s finest musicians. Morgan
is highly regarded among his peers for his deep swing feel, sensitivity, versatility and musicality, as well as his reverence for jazz history and wide-ranging
musical vocabulary. Showing enviable versatility, Morgan is also a noted composer and bandleader.

Voix Étoufées (Strasbourg and Berlin) and l’Ecole Militaire (Paris). The excellence of
her creative research was recognised by the University of Victoria’s 2017 REACH
award. In 2018-19 Snizek will be a guest musician at the Loja Festival in Ecuador, a
guest teacher and artist at Suzhou University in China and the featured guest artist of
the 2019 Edmonton Flute Festival.
Allison Zaichkowski of White Rock, BC, began her horn studies at age 22 quite by
chance when she met Dr. Wayne Jeffrey at Kwantlen University College. He encouraged her to switch to this precarious instrument and her life as a horn player began
there. After studying horn with him for 2 years, she completed degrees at UBC and
U of Calgary, focusing on solo competitions. She premiered in Canada James Beckel’s
Horn Concerto The Glass Bead Game with the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble.
After completing her MMus, she joined the army reserves in 2009 and moved to Ottawa. In 2012, she transferred to the regular forces and joined the Central Band of
the Canadian Armed Forces. After 8 years in Ottawa, she was excited to be posted
back to BC in 2016, joining the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in Esquimalt.
Since then, the Naden Band has taken her to many exciting places such as Dieppe
(France) and Hawaii and she is looking forward to going to Belgium and Chile this
coming November.

Lafayette String Quartet
How do you compress a full 32 years together into a single comprehensive biography? The members of the LSQ are Artists-in-Residence at the University
of Victoria where they teach violin, viola, cello and coach chamber music to
some of Canada’s finest young string players. They are active in the Victoria
community working with young people in the GVYO, connecting with the
strings program in the public schools, performing in Pacific Baroque, hosting
Quartet Fest West and continuing their annual Health Awareness Forum
every fall. They are frequently sought-after to adjudicate in local, provincial
and national music festivals. All of this while maintaining an active touring
schedule with concerts this year taking them to Mexico, the Unites States,
the Yukon, Saskatchewan, BC and Ontario. They have performed all over
North America and Europe and are always met with critical acclaim. Their
various quartet projects, often in partnership with esteemed colleagues,
have included the Complete Beethoven Cycle, the Second Viennese School,
Bartók’s Legacy and the Complete Cycle of Shostakovich String Quartets.
Upcoming projects include performing the complete viola quintets of Mozart (with Yariv Aloni, 2019), and Beethoven’s Legacy (2020) honouring one
of their favourite composer’s 250th anniversary by exploring the friendships
and influences that lead to the Beethoven Quartet phenomenon. The LSQ
and colleagues will delve into how these remarkable quartets changed the
course of musical history and continues to change it even today.

Yariv Aloni, viola
Beloved colleague Yariv Aloni is one of Victoria’s most artistically involved
musicians. A wonderful conductor as well as violist, Aloni is the Artistic Director of the Victoria Chamber Orchestra, the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, principal guest conductor of the West Coast Symphony Orchestra in
Vancouver and has recently been appointed Artistic Director of the Sooke
Philharmonic. As the violist of both the Penderecki String Quartet and the
Aviv Piano Quartet, he has performed in many concert halls around the
world. A regular guest with the Vetta Ensemble, he continues to perform in
various combinations at numerous chamber music concerts, festivals and
recital series all over Canada. Aloni will be performing the complete Mozart
viola quintets with the Lafayette String Quartet next year.

Lafayette String Quartet
In July 1986, four young musicians, based in Detroit and just beginning their
professional careers, performed together for the first time as the Lafayette
String Quartet.Today the LSQ continues to flourish with its original personnel:
violinists Ann Elliott-Goldschmid and Sharon Stanis, violist Joanna Hood, and
cellist Pamela Highbaugh Aloni.
The LSQ’s extraordinary musicianship was recognized early on. Already in
1988, it was ranked among the magazine Musical America’s “Young Artists to
Watch,” and in its first years it won the Grand prize at the Fischoff National
Chamber Music Competition and prizes at the Portsmouth (now City of London) International String Quartet Competition, and the Chicago Discovery
Competition. As winners of the 1988 Cleveland String Quartet Competition, the LSQ had the opportunity to study for two years with the Cleveland
Quartet at the Eastman School of Music, in Rochester, New York.
In 1991, the four women became artists-in-residence at the University of
Victoria’s School of Music, in British Columbia—positions they still hold today.
They received honorary doctorates from University Canada West and were
honored with the inaugural Craigdarroch Award for Excellence in Artistic Expression in 2010 from the University of Victoria.
The LSQ has performed across Canada, the United States, Mexico and Europe, with concerts often allied with masterclasses and workshops. They often collaborate with other string quartets including the Saguenay (Alcan), the
New Zealand, the Penderecki, the Molinari, the Emily Carr, and the Quarteto
Latinoamericano.

The Lafayette String Quartet is represented by Lydia Kasianchuk.

Saguenay String Quartet
The Saguenay String Quartet (formerly known as the Alcan String Quartet)
has developed a reputation for excellence throughout Canada and internationally since its inception in 1989. The Quartet’s originality, contagious enthusiasm, unique sonority, and remarkable cohesion have all contributed to its
long-term success. The ensemble’s list of accomplishments is impressive: 1000
concerts; over 100 live radio broadcasts, numerous television appearances;
tours throughout North America, Europe, Asia; and a number of commissioned pieces and first performances.
The Quartet’s recent tours have led the Quartet in Italy, France, the United
States, Asia and all over Canada. Its last visit to the Lanaudière Festival, accompanied by pianist Alain Lefèvre, was hailed by more than 6,000 people and
welcomed by enthusiastic critics. This concert was also awarded the Opus
Prize for the concert of the year by the Conseil québécois de la musique,
as well as a Félix (Adisq) prize for the recording of the same André Mathieu
repertoire.
Another cornerstone in the Quartet’s history is the release of its highly anticipated Complete Cycle of Beethoven’s 16 String Quartets as part of its 25th
anniversary celebrations. In addition to its performing career, the Quartet is
regularly invited to teach and conduct masterclasses at universities, conservatories, and summer chamber music institutes both in Quebec and abroad.
The Saguenay String Quartet is based in Chicoutimi, Québec, where it receives the unconditional support of the Orchestre Symphonique du Saguenay.

The Saguenay String Quartet is represented by Agence Station Bleue
(stationbleue.com).
