Dr. Erin Campbell| Email | Fine Arts Building 104

January 4 - April 4, 2016 | CRN 21846
Every week: MR 11:30 am - 12:50 pm

Objects live complicated lives. Like people, they engage our minds and our senses, evoke memories, traverse time, and generate narratives. As social connectors, they are given as gifts, exchanged, inherited, transformed, and even destroyed. Basing our inquiry in Europe, 1500-1800, we will examine a variety of portable objects including jewellery, perfume burners, statuettes, miniatures, coffers, furnishings, paintings, textiles, automata, etc. We will be asking questions about materials, materiality, and the capacity of objects to create environments.
