How do people make paintings, beautiful objects, and buildings? What are the intrinsic properties of materials and how do these affect the working practices of artists and artisans? These are important questions for those engaged in the study of arts and crafts. This course considers the processes involved in traditional crafts across the globe, from the painting of an icon to the casting of a bronze figure. Participants in the course will also have the opportunity to gain first-hand contact with a wide variety of ancient and medieval objects from private collections, the University Museum, and the McPherson Library. ‚Äč
