How do we define the sacred across global visual cultures? In this course, we will explore diverse religious and spiritual traditions, to enquire how images, spaces, and landscapes order visual practices that communicate between humans and our individual/ collective sense of the sacred. We will be exploring the myriad ways that holy images, spaces and places impact on embodied states of consciousness within given historical and cultural contexts. Let’s test how hearing, feeling, seeing, dreaming, imagining and visioning impact on past and present beholders in a set of key case studies (one of which you will generate for our class). This class will be taught through a multi-cultural, multi-faith and diverse sexualities frame of analysis.
