In times of adversity, conflict and crisis, artistic expression has long been a fundamental means of documentation. This year the Visual Impetus conference will center on the theme: “Art as Witness: Challenges and Opportunities”. As humans face challenges on a local and global scale, visual media has become a vital witness for our encounters. Art, in the broadest sense, can testify to our experience and build resilience within our communities. It becomes a voice for those who are silenced. Visual languages can channel the unspeakable, call out injustice, and call upon others to act. As we move forward, we propose that Art can also direct healing, hold out new hope, and create new opportunities.
