Biography

Frances’s published creative nonfiction includes two books of narrative history—Women of the Klondike and Children of the Klondike—and a travel memoir, Hiking With Ghosts. She is also the author of Woodpeckers of North America and Owls of North America and has written extensively about wildlife, ecology, and environmental issues for numerous Canadian and American magazines.

In 2008, Frances did a three-month stint as Writer in Residence at Berton House in Dawson City, Yukon. In 2009, she received an Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources fellowship for the IJNR’s inaugural Puget Sound Institute.

Combining her passions for history and biology, Frances is currently working on a creative investigation of the life and times of North America’s largest and most influential rodent.
