The Department of Theatre offers three programs at the Master’s level. Ph.D. programs are offered as Interdisciplinary Studies with other University of Victoria departments.
We expect graduate candidates to possess a strong background
and experience in the theatrical arts.
We have a good working relationship with the professional community and educational theatres on Vancouver Island, providing opportunities for graduate students to do various types of practical work off-campus when time permits.
MA in Theatre History
Applicants must possess either a general knowledge of Western theatre
history, from the Greeks to the present, or a strong background
in dramatic literature. Applicants must also be familiar with the
practicalities of theatre production: design, direction,
and performance.
Requirements for an MA will include a scholarly
paper suitable for presentation at a sanctioned academic conference.
Projects with a theoretical orientation are encouraged, but other
types of research within theatre history and drama are also possible,
and prospective candidates are invited to discuss their research
interest directly with the Department.
MFA in Directing
MFA directing students will direct a number of short projects and
at least one full-length play before graduation. A practicum production
is required along with a practicum report. Members of the performance
faculty supervise all projects and productions.
Only one student is admitted to the MFA Directing program. The competition is rigorous and a student should not apply unless he/she has an undergraduate degree with a major in theatre and a minimum GPA of B+. The student should also have a strong background in dramatic literature and dramatic theory as well as substantial practical experience in acting and directing.
MFA in Design
Candidates develop their knowledge and skills in three major fields of design for the theatre; scenery, costume and lighting. Practical application of theoretical knowledge and learned skills is particularly emphasized. Normally
candidates provide designs for a number of departmental productions, specializing in one area of design, with a minor specialization in a second area.
The MFA in Design is a non-thesis program. The final project
involves designing one or more elements of a realized production
as well as a written report about the production.
Applicants must have a basic knowledge and some experience in design of scenery, costume and lighting. They should also possess at least a survey knowledge of Western theatre history and directing.
