Theory
Our theory section offers a superb series of core courses and electives designed to provide students with the tools and vocabulary needed to understand and communicate about music. The theory faculty includes scholars with international reputations, who are enthusiastic about teaching and making music.
Course Requirements
All students are required to take 100-, 200-, and 300-level courses, which introduce the following:
- basics of counterpoint and harmony
- analysis of harmony and form in 18th- and 19th-century music
- analysis of 20th- and 21st-century music
Four electives are available at the 400 level, which cover:
- A particular analytical approach (often that of Heinrich Schenker)
- Baroque counterpoint
- Acoustics
- Jazz theory
