Performance
The Performance major is ideal if you are seeking a career as:
- An orchestral musician
- A freelance concert artist
- A teacher of performance, in universities and colleges, in conservatories, or in private studios
Performance majors should expect to go on to further study at graduate schools or conservatories.
The MMus in Performance is ideal if you are a BMus graduate from a performance program, and are seeking advanced training in preparation for one of the careers listed above.
Courses
The undergraduate program is designed for you to devote the maximum amount of your time to practicing and other performance-related activities.
In addition to weekly master class and participating in ensembles, Performance majors attend the Integrated Performance Seminar, in which small groups of student performers are coached by a different faculty member each week.
In order to be admitted to the Performance major, you must audition before a jury of Performance faculty, usually at the end of the first or second year.
The graduate program is designed to further growth as a soloist and ensemble participant. In addition to performance-related courses, the program includes study in related areas, such as conducting, performance practices, and music history.

Concerts
Each year, several udergraduate student performers appear as soloists with the University Orchestra in the School of Music's annual Concerto Concert. All Performance majors present a full evening recital in fourth year, and should expect to appear frequently in student recitals during their four years of study.
MMus candidates will perform a final graduating recital and are expected to participate in ensembles where appropriate to their instrument in each year of their residency. Placement in large and small ensembles will be made according to the student’s needs and the needs of the School of Music.
