01 Guest Lecture: Sixtrum percussion ensemble @ 11:00am - 12:00pm
Orion Series in Fine Arts presents
Sixtrum, Percussion Ensemble in Residence, Faculty of Music, Université de Montréal
Presenting Fabrice Marandola’s orchestration of Claude Vivier’s Pulau Dewata

Created in 2007, Sixtrum reunites Montreal percussionists João Catalão, Julien Grégoire, Philip Hornsey, Kristie Ibrahim, Sandra Joseph and Fabrice Marandola. Each member brings to the group years of experience in all areas of percussion. Together, they share a desire to renew and develop a repertoire for percussion ensemble introduced in the second half of the 20th Century.

Sixtrum will be performing on Wednesday February 1 at 8 pm in the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall

Innovative, edgy, and at the forefront of new music in Europe and beyond, Ensemble Nikel will join forces with the University of Victoria Orchestra for an extraordinary evening of classical and contemporary music. Under the direction of Ajtony Csaba, the orchestra will present the world premiere of Lovely Monster Reloaded by Bernhard Gander and the North American premiere of Chaya Czernowin’s Zohar Iver (Blind Radiance); a concerto for Ensemble Nikel (saxophone, electric guitar, piano and percussion) and orchestra. Czernowin, Walter Bigelow Rosen Professor of Music at Harvard University, will be present for the performance and will take part in a pre-performance talk.

Special guests include Louise Rose to accompany the singing of her arrangement of I'm gonna sit at the welcome table and male singers from UVic to sing the Champagne Chorus from Die Fledermaus

Audience members are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable foodstuffs to the concert and newly appointed Our Place executive director Don Evans will be on hand to speak about the work of the society and receive tax-deductible monetary donations. To further support the work of Our Place, there will be a raffle for a sushi-making workshop hosted by chef Takumi Kitamura.

13 Faculty Recital: 4 Saxophones @ 2:30pm - 4:00pm
Four of the Westcoast’s premier saxophonists converge on UVic to present a May afternoon recital of light works for quartet. Well known Victoria jazz musician Gordon Clements and Victoria Conservatory colleague Dr. Erik Abbink, UVic saxophone professor Wendell Clanton together with long time associate and gifted pedagogue Ross Ingstrup reunite for a concert featuring a tango sandwiched between jazz inspired pieces and vibrant French neoclassical compositions. Experience original saxophone quartet compositions from the 1800s to the near present on the occasion of the birth of legendary Canadian pianist, composer and arranger Gil Evans.
