How do I?

  1. How do I book a practice room?
    Room requests can be submitted online from any computer or online device.  There is a computer located at the front counter of the School of Music office dedicated for this purpose. You will require your Netlink ID and password to login.

  2. Who's my adviser?
    It depends on your major area of study. Faculty advisors help you with program planning and course selection.

  3. How do I add a course?
    Friday, September 21 is the last day for adding courses that begin in the fall term. Saturday, January 19 is the last day for adding courses that begin in January. Use online registration until the last day to add courses for each term. After the last day to add courses, a request to add a course must be submitted on an Undergraduate Course Change Form to Undergraduate Records, accompanied by a written explanation to justify the request and a memo from the instructor.   4. How do I drop a course?
    The last day for 100% reduction of tuition fees for first-term and full-year courses is Tuesday, Sept 18. The last day to drop with a 50% tuition reduction is Oct 9.

    The last day to drop a course (with 100% reduction of tuition fees) that starts in January is Wednesday, January 16. The last day to drop with a 50% tuition reduction is February 6.

    Students may drop first-term courses until the last day in October and full-year and second-term courses until the last day in February without receiving a failing grade.

  5. How do I declare my major?
    At the end of the common first year, you will declare a choice of major. You will be assigned a faculty advisor to assist in course selection and program completion.

  6. How do I know which courses are mandatory for my program?

  7. How do I sign up to perform in a Tuesdaymusic  concert?
    Pick up an application form from the School of Music office. It requires your instructor’s signature. Return the form to the Music Office or directly to the Concert Manager, Kristy Farkas (Rm. B129).

  8. How do I sign up to perform in a Fridaymusic concert?
    Fridaymusic concerts which have been allocation to specific instrument(s) will be organized by department section heads. Applications for all “Open” Fridaymusic recitals can be picked up from the School of Music office. The form requires your instructor’s signature. Return the form to Professor Art Rowe (drop off in Music Office).

  9. How do I book a recital?
    After you’ve read the Recital Guidelines, submit your request directly to Kristy Farkas at concert@uvic.ca

  10. How do I get a recording of my performance?
    All School of Music concerts are recorded for archival purposes (**with the exception of non-degree/non-graduating recitals).  These recordings are kept in Music & Audio in the McPherson Library.  If you wish to have a copy of the recording please fill out an Application for Reproduction of Recorded Performance, available from the Music Office, and submit it to the Office at least one week prior to your recital. You need to supply a blank CD (you can buy one at the School of Music general office for $ 2.00).

    For non-degree/non-graduating recitals, you must make arrangements with an authorized School of Music Recording Technician at least two weeks in advance of your recital date. An email list of approved Recording Technicians is available at the School of Music main office.

  11. How do I prepare a program for my graduating recital? Is there a template?
    You are responsible for preparing your own concert program. Contact Kristy Farkas (concert@uvic.ca) for a template.  For all graduating recitals, the School of Music will print a single page program as per the template.  The printing of additional pages, such as translations, program notes, bios, etc., will be your responsibility.  Completed programs must be submitted by email to the Music Office (music@uvic.ca) for printing no later than one week prior to your recital date.  

  12. Do I need to find my own pianist?
    No.  One will be assigned to you, however you are welcome to arrange a collaboration on your own, if there is someone you are interested in working with.

  13. How to book appointments with the Director?
    Contact Christine Payne by email (music@uvic.ca) or in person when the School of Music office is open (weekdays, 9am-12 noon and 1pm-4pm).

  14. How can I apply for a scholarship?
    Some scholarships and bursaries require an application, some don’t. For descriptions and a  complete listing, visit Student Awards & Financial Aid or visit the Financial Aid page on the School of Music website.
