How to Apply for a Combined Major in
Music & Computer Science

  1. Register as a UVic student

    New to UVic
If you have never registered in UVic credit courses, you must apply for admission to the university. Access the on-line application here and follow the “Steps to Applying for Admission”. Students admitted to any of the following faculties can access the first year courses required to enter this program: Engineering (Computer Science), Humanities, Science, Social Sciences or Fine Arts. Thus, you should apply for general admission to UVic to enter any one of these five Faculties for which you can meet the admission requirements. We suggest that you consider Computer Science as this is where much of your focus in future years will be. Choose the Faculty based on your interests, preparation, and any second choice of program you may have. Please note that if you apply to the Faculty of Fine Arts, you must indicate a specific program (History in Art, Music, Theatre, Writing, Visual Arts) and be prepared to meet all of the admission requirements including auditions, portfolios and/or interviews. Admission requirements and deadlines can be found here. Once you have applied for admission and the application fee has been processed, you will receive further information regarding your student number, required documents and the status of your application. You will be advised of the decision as soon as it is possible.

    Current UVic students
If you are currently a UVic student and have been authorized for registration for the upcoming Winter Session, proceed to Step 2 to indicate your interest in applying to this program.

    Returning UVic students -
If you have previously registered at UVic but are not authorized for the Upcoming Winter Session you must submit an Application for Re-registration available here and click on "Undergraduate Re-registration Application". Select the Application for Re-registration for the upcoming Winter Session. Students authorized to register in any of the following faculties can access the first year courses required for this program - Social Sciences, Science, Humanities, Engineering (Computer Science), and Fine Arts. The deadline for applying to re-register can be found here. Normal application deadline is May 15 for entry in the following September. You will be advised of the decision as soon as it is possible.

  2. Apply for the combined Music/Computer Science Major.

To indicate your interest in the combined Music/Computer Science degree program, apply to the combined Music/Computer Science program using the on-line application here. You will receive an automatic email acknowledgment.

The Music/Computer Science Admissions Panel will review your application. Eligibility to register in the first year Music courses for this program is based on your academic record and music background. If approved your student recorded will be coded "Pre-Music/Computer Science" (PMC) and this will allow you to register in the required Music courses for first and second year. You will be advised of the Admission Panel's decision by e-mail.

  3. Register for all required courses

If you are advised that you are eligible to register in the first year courses for this program complete your course registration on-line. Be sure to register for all required first year courses (except those for which you have transfer credit). On-line registration opens in late June or early July. You will be notified of the precise date for your case.

  4. When You Have Completed the Required First Year Courses
    1. Interviews
All students in this program will be invited each year in early April to a one-on-one interview with the Admissions Panel. This will give the Panel an opportunity to assess your progress in the program, and will help them to determine whether or not a student should proceed to formal admission.
    2. Apply for formal admission to combined degree program
When you have completed the required first year courses and have been interviewed by the Admissions Panel, you must begin the process of formal admission to the combined degree program by sending an e-mail to the School of Music Administrative Officer (Jill Michalski: michalsk@uvic.ca). The Review Commitee will review your courses and clarify for you of the next steps in the process. The application deadline for formal admission is May 1st.
    3. Re-register in the Faculty of Fine Arts
Once approved for formal admission to the program, you must re-register into the Faculty of Fine Arts. Your student record will then be coded "Music/Computer Science" (MUCS) which will enable you to enroll in all music courses making up the rest of the degree. The application for re-registration is available from the UVic Registrar website (at that page click "Undergraduate Re-registration Application").
    4. Declare your program in the Faculty of Fine Arts
After you re-register you must visit the Fine Arts Academic Advisor (Anne Heinl: aheinl@finearts.uvic.ca) in order to declare your program as "Combined Computer Science/Music". At that time the Advisor will help you plan your courses.
    5. Register for courses
If you are advised that you have been granted admission to the program program complete your course registration on-line. Be sure to register for all required second year courses (except those for which you have transfer credit). On-line registration opens in early July. You will be notified of the precise date for your case.
