Graduate students in Art History are invited to submit abstracts for Visual Impetus XV, the fifteenth annual graduate student symposium in the Department of History in Art at the University of Victoria. This year marks the fifteenth anniversary of the symposium and to commemorate this historic event the organizing committee has chosen the theme of Intersections. The conference will address cross-cultural influences in the making and meaning of art over a far-reaching geographic and chronological spectrum. Visual Impetus aims to provide and promote a multi-disciplinary forum for graduate students engaged in research on the following topics, but not limited to:

  • Art and Exchange: Global nature of art history throughout time powered by an exchange of ideas.
  • Artistic influences: Appropriation of style and/or motifs from other cultures by means of travel, colonization, and exploration.
  • Art Market: Changing tastes in collecting and patronage.
  • Cross-cultural influences: As exhibited through architecture, sculpture, film, photography, painting, new media, manuscripts, print media, and fashion.

The committee encourages papers from all areas that reflect on the theme of intersections between people, cultures, and art.
