Introduction
Film Studies, a unique interdisciplinary program, brings together a broad range of courses which include the study of national cinemas, film in history, film in relation to both visual art and literature, women and film, experimental film, popular film and television, and writing in film. The aims of the program are to acquaint students with a variety of perspectives on the study of film, hone analytical skills, and enhance a critical appreciation of film culture in historical and social contexts. This interdisciplinary Minor in Film Studies is an ideal complement to a major concentration in either the Humanities or the Arts. Structure Of The ProgramThe Faculties of Humanities and Fine Arts jointly offer a General Program in Film Studies. This program leads to the BA degree (see General Program). Students may obtain a Minor by completing the requirements for the General Program together with a Major or Honours program or other degree program in another department or faculty (see Minor). Priority for admission to courses in Film Studies will go to students registered in the Film Studies Program or majoring in one of the departments offering courses in the Program.RequirementsStudents wishing to declare a Minor in Film Studies should contact the Advising Centre for their faculty after completing HA 295 (Introduction to Film Studies) with a grade of B- or better.Required CoursesStudents in this program are required to take the 3-unit HA 295 ("Introduction to Film Studies") as well as nine units from the film courses listed in this brochure.
